Not too long ago
an earlier attempt to stand up the singer-songwriter failed due to the
lo-fi approach - sincerity in an extreme minimalist setting. Not only
did these artistes fail to connect, their lack of selling power killed
the genre.
Back to the future
then. Looks like the current batch have been listening to early Paul Simon,
James Taylor and Neil Young for inspiration. At least they can now stand
in front of an audience and entertain either solo with piano or guitar.
Better if a few friends turn up to support with bass and drums.
M Ward or Matt Ward
has presence, something the lo-fi bunch never could muster. He also has
melodies. Songs that have a hook [check out Cosmopolitan Pop, To Go Home],
words that mean something, perhaps not too deep. Vocally, he hasn't found
his own voice yet. He's still competing with past heroes.
Worth investigating
though. So if you are wavering, listen to M Ward perform some of the songs
off his latest album Post-War. By the way, Post-War refers to Ward's frame
of mind while writing this album. He was thinking about the [post-war]
future when the current conflict will be over.
