Kammerflimmer
Kollektief
Kristiansand
2007 [no label, 1CD]
Live
at the Punktfestival, Kristiansand, Norway, August 31, 2007.
For sheer listenability,
Jens Lekman's Night Falls Over Kortedala is among the top albums of 2007.
But it is Germany's Kammerflimmer Kollektief's Jinx that stands out both
in terms of listening pleasure and for adventurism in music.
Reviewing the Kollektief's
Jinx album, BigO editor Philip Cheah wrote: "Now that the Kammerflimmer
Kollektief have been pared down to three members - Thomas Weber (guitar,
electronics, piano), Heike Aumuller (harmonium, vocals, synths, percussion)
and Johannes Frisch (double bass, percussion), the group's multi-dimensional
textured sound has also been reduced. The jazz element only makes a cameo
on one track when wind instruments are added. Still, it's to the group's
credit that their multi-faceted music is so recognisable."
The opening track
on the Jinx album is Palimspsest, easily one of the most pleasing tracks
on the album, before it segues into the title track, which sounds like
Buddhist chants against a cascading sweep of music but the group's Thomas
Weber calls it "Shaman Doo-Wop!"
Onstage at the Punktfestival
in Norway, the Kollektief eschew the easy access of the Jinx album and
opt for experimentation and improvisation. For a start, the breezy Palimpsest
is slowed down (though still recognisable) and becomes a meditative poem
as it eventually merges into the frenetic Both Eyes Tight Shut. Equilibrium,
from the Absencen album (2005), might have the sonorous overtones one
associates with Arvo Part but it is still engaging nevertheless. For the
now familiar Jinx, this time it's Heike Aumuller's "chants" against what
sounds like a speeded-up click track - are the Kollektief making a foray
into dance as well?
This is what Thomas
Weber wrote on the group's website (kammerflimmer.com): "From 2004 on,
we performed live not only with the sextet, but also in diverse smaller
line-ups. The most enduring of those proved to be the trio consisting
of Heike Aumuller, Johannes Frisch and me. With our eyes shut tight, it
provided us with a lot of room for excursions and turned out to be a fertile
ground for new developments and experiences. The music became more and
more organic, the interplay more intuitive." For their latest Jinx album,
"singing can be heard: Heikes voice fishes truncated words from
the sound - in best scat-tradition. Shaman Doo-Wop!" As Weber says: "Thanks
for the attention and for listening. The fire ain't out yet, baby!"
Thanks to tatadada

hjweis for the cover picture. To maintain the quality of the broadcast,
the tracks are in the MP2 format (256kbit/48kHz). See below on how to

MP2 Files
Readers can download
the free iTunes player to play MP2 files.
Here's a helpful
how-to, by ubu (ubu-space.blogspot.com),
for those who want to convert MP2 files into audio files (for audio CD).
Please do not use
the dbpoweramp software to transcode the mp2 files to .wav. The transcoding
process leads to a noticeable decrease of the sound quality!
For transcoding the
.mp2 file I recommend the freeware BeSweet/ BeLight (if you use a Windows
PC Ihave to add) : http://www.free-codecs.com/download/BeLight.htm
Both are .zip-files;
unzip BeSweet first into a folder. Then you should unzip BeLight into
the same folder. This done, you can start the software by clicking on
the BeLight symbol in the folder. The software is easy to work with, I
think; choose the register card "WAV/ PCM". Do not check any of the boxes
on the left except the one for "Output Sampling Rate" (this should be
44100hz), and on the right please choose "wav" (under "Output Format")
and "16 bits stereo wav" under "Output Channels".
Put the mp2 file
into the window on top and click on the "Start Processing" below. The
transcoding process will start immediately.
If BeLight does not
work with your computer you should try a software named Switch. It is
available for free at http://www.nch.com.au/switch/plus.html
There are versions
for Windows and Mac.
Another freeware
that offers good results is Apples iTunes which is available for
Windows and Macintosh platforms. To transcode an .mp2 file please follow
these instructions:
First, you have to
import the file to iTunes: "File" -> "Import" -> select the folder
where the .mp2 file is stored.
Select the imported
.mp2 file in the iTunes main window using the mouse with a single left-click.
Go to "Edit" ->
"Preferences" and select the register card "advanced". Then choose the
register "Importing".
In the dialogue box
"Import Using" you have to select "WAV encoder" (or "AIFF encoder" if
you are using a Mac platform). Below, you will find another dalogue box
named "setting". Please choose "custom"; then "sample rate: 44.100 hz",
"sample size: 16 bit", and "channels: stereo". Close the dialogue boxes
by clicking on the "OK" button.
Right-click on the
selected .mp2 file in the iTunes main window and choose "convert selection
to wav" (or "convert selection to AIFF" if you have selected that file
format in the previous step). Then the transcoding process starts.
