ROIO of the Week [Recordings
of Indeterminate Origin]
There
Will Be Blood In Denmark
Whether
you like them or not, A Silver Mt Zion have entered the mainstream. The
music that was featured on the trailer for the fourth season of Lost was
the opening section of the song Tho You Are Gone I Still Often Walk With
You from the band's Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward album.
They've got their foot in the door and they're not budging.

A Silver Mt Zion
Live in Aarhus [no label, 2CD]
Live
at Voxhall, Aarhus, Denmark, April 2, 2008. Excellent- audience recording.
The new album, 13
Blues For Thirteen Moons, is played in full at this concert in Denmark
during the band's European tour. The shift in approach since 2005's Horses
In The Sky where all the songs had vocals arrives in full on this new
album - all the songs have vocals too and, for the first time, you don't
have to strain to hear the words - a lyric sheet is included.
There's something
wrong in the world, and people should be brave enough to say so. But to
date, the album has polarised fans.
"Because 13 Blues
for Thirteen Moons is a much rockier record than its predecessors, going
into full throttle electric jams without the extended symphonic introductions,
A Silver Mt. Zion is showing progress towards greater brevity and immediacy
in their work. This of course comes at a price. The often poetic and memorable
lyrics that Efrim has delivered consistently and uniquely in the past
are harder to understand and appreciate on this record, as his singing
becomes more pained and overpowering and the musicianship becomes heavier.
While I can appreciate the band's growth and high stakes political drama,
the repetitive yelps and rollicking dynamics take a way from what could
have been a rewarding and intriguing art rock album." - The Rock Blogger.
Others are more complimentary.
"Then the band plunges
into the song proper, full-on bashing drums and raw cello and swirling
violins and fuzzy guitars all playing a riff that Tony Iommi would have
been proud to come up with, but slower, more worried, more chaotic. It
goes on like that for the best part of 15 minutes, sometimes changing,
with the occasional instrumental passage, but basically this glorious
communal racket that surges like waves crashing on a beach in a winter
storm at night. Yes, it's repetitive, but it changes the way the sea changes,
basically the same but always just different enough to be fascinating.
And that's just the first song." - lexo1941
But change is inevitable
as AllMusic Guide's reviewer Sergey Mesenov suggests:
"Such a shift in
sound can even be perceived as a political statement of sorts, embodying
a collective voice of people who used to be quiet and keep to themselves
but are now unable to remain silent and intend to inform the powers that
be that they are not going to take it any longer. Whatever that "it" might
be - ongoing war, oil prices, poverty, hunger, social unrest, signs of
Apocalypse - it's really beside the point; what matters is a simple act
of first raising your head and then your voice and your fist."
It shouldn't come
as a surprise then that a side project for a live album is currently still
being worked at and has the working title Fuck You Drakulas. The opening
number at this show, 1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound, is a painful reminder
of that crazy war in the Middle East.
This show in Denmark
was in front of a small audience of 130 to 150 fans. There is a warm rapport
between the band and the audience with Efrim and Ian talking about their
visit to a 7-Eleven and the prospect of eating an oily muffin. Despite
the angry songs, the band stand apart from their punkness with grace and
serenity.
