The man who is best
remembered from the Woodstock movie for leading the "fish cheer" tonight
plays in entirety his 1971 album, War War War, in the first part of the
show. Mainly protest songs and anti-war songs littered that album - The
Call, The Man From Athabaska, The Munition Maker, Jean Desprez, War Widow
and The March Of The Dead. These are the World War I poems of Robert W
Service set to music by Joe who accompanies himself on the 12-string guitar.
The standout song
on the album according to net reviewer Michael Weber "is "The Ballad of
Jean Desprez", a nine-and-a-half minute account of reprisals and counter-reprisals
in a small French village; Jean Desprez is a nine-year-old peasant boy
who finds himself in the middle of events beyone his control or even comprehension,
and proves in at least one way equal to the moment. It builds to an inevitable,
tragic-heroic conclusion."
All of which makes
for uncomfortable listening once again today. "The Munition Maker" a man
who has become "rajah-rich" through arms sales but who knows "there are
no pockets in a shroud." "War Widow" is a bitterly ironic little ditty
that explains how war is a Good Thing because it keeps the population
down.
"The Twins" summarises
the lives of twin brothers, one of whom is a Good Soldier, one of whom
is a shirker and profiteer. The dead twin is not hard to guess.
For the second part
of the show, Joe showed off his virtuoso gift on the steel guitar [Thinking
Of John Fahey and Crossroads] and introduced a new anti-war song, Superbird,
lambasting the current U.S. president before singing his famous "fish
cheer".
We offer only the
second part of the show and two tracks from War War War as a taster. Shared
by Scottellis at the DIME site where this show is currently listed as
"dead" with no seeder. CHerrmann57 shared the front cover. You can buy
the official live album of War War War at Joe's site below. Men read,
write and sing about the evils of war while politicians start them.
