Cliff
Richard And The Shadows
Live In
Holland [Aulica, 1CD]
Live
in Holland 1964-1965.
Growing up in the
'60s, when it came to instrumental pop, fans tended to either gravitate
towards the American Ventures or to the British Shadows. While The Ventures
remain a personal favourite of this writer (the Telstar album is very
listenable until today), it is still a chore trying to remember the members'
names - Don Wilson (rhythm guitar), Bob Bogle (bass), Nokie Edwards (lead)
and Mel Taylor (drums). On the other hand, lead guitarist Hank Marvin
certainly stands out among The Shadows. The rest of The Shadows were Bruce
Welch (guitar) and Brian Bennett (drums).
Generally known as
Cliff Richard's backing band, with their clean lines, The Shadows were
a top-notch and influential instrumental pop group in their time, especially
in Asia. Apache, in 1960, is generally seen as their first hit. By the
time Cliff Richard and The Shadows played Holland in 1964-65, they already
had a reputation and the kind of audience adoration that would go the
extreme with Beatlemania.
Unlike some of today's
bands which try to give something more in their live shows (probably as
a result of those jam bands in the '70s), bands in the '60s tended to
reproduce their hits note for note when they played live (the Beatles
included). So no surprises here, other than the formal introduction of
new bassist John Rostill to Dutch fans ("he likes cheese"), who had replaced
Licorice Locking.
From the opening
The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt, fans would have no problem encountering
some of their favourite Shadows tunes - Apache, Sleepwalk, Foot Tapper,
F.B.I.; and from Cliff, by-now evergreens such as Spanish Harlem, Do You
Wanna Dance, The Minute You're Gone, Don't Talk To Him and It's All In
The Game. The only exception is perhaps Cliff's calypso-laced Angel which,
unfortunately, cannot stand anywhere near Elvis's gold standard.
So just sit back
and take that trip down memory lane you've promised yourself. You can
even join in a singalong with Cliff as he leads you through a medley of
The Young Ones, Living Doll, Lucky Lips and Bachelor Boy.
The mono sound is
very good though it is not known if this comes from a soundboard or a
radio recording. - Stephen Tan
