Damien Jurado does
not write obscure songs with difficult tunes. He is an old style singer-songwriter
who has been compared to Nick Drake for the density of his words. This
seven song performance at last year's Northwest MusicFest had him debut
four new songs plus a J Tillman cover. Amazing for a new artist, all the
songs stick to memory. Jurado supported himself with an acoustic guitar
and some harmony vocals from Jenna Conrad [aka Troubletown].
This solo performance
is warm and inviting and will remind older fans of the first time they
saw Neil Young or James Taylor solo with acoustic guitar. Seams has a
light, uplifting melody, a song about love and forgiveness. Put Your Best
Dress On has Damien and Jenna recasting the Abilene song with the man
inviting the woman to come out.
Jurado then informs
the audience that the next two he'd just written recently, Black Kite
and Sheets. The former uses the imagery of a kite trapped in the branches
of a tree for a lover trapped in love. Sheets [the initial title] is a
cheating song about a loser who sings of his anger and sorrow of having
to share the bed of his lover with the other man. Perhaps the best of
the new songs.
And don't forget
to check J Tillman's work as well. So until Jurado records the new songs
for his next album, this radio session is a must. Shared by Dave Caley
