Wilco
Chicago
2008 [no label, 3CD]
Live
at The Riviera, Chicago, IL, February 19, 2008.
By now, Wilco have
strayed quite a fair bit from the alternative country tag in the days
of Uncle Tupelo. Never mind that Wilco may sound like many Brit-pop bands
(and even a bit like a watered-down Replacements); never mind that their
catchy pop-rock is both riveting and infectious; never mind that at times,
Jeff Tweedy sounds like a younger Paul McCartney...
To a Wilco diehard,
these might be sacriligeous words... but that does not detract the fact
that, live, Wilco are immensely enjoyable, and fairly chatty too. And
over five nights at The Riviera in Chicago in February, the group practically
unloaded their entire catalogue on their fans. One can only have so much
of a good thing.
Thanks to PoorPlaces
for sharing this excellent FM broadcast on the Dime site.
As Rock & Roll
Ghost commented on his blog:
"The band began with Being There's Outta Mind (Outta Site) then kicked
into A.M.'s lead-off track, I Must Be High, which sounded as ragged and
countrified as it did way back when. From then it was an impeccable version
of Sky Blue Sky's Impossible Germany and then, two songs later, the live
debut of that album's Leave You Like You Found Me, which was flat-out
gorgeous to hear (that was a glockenspiel being played, right?).
"Guitarist Nels Cline
rattled the rafters during A Ghost Is Born's Handshake Drugs and to say
that hearing four Summerteeth tunes back-to-back (Summerteeth, In A Future
Age, ELT and A Shot In The Arm) was a blissed out experience is not an
exaggeration.
"Misunderstood is
a song that has stayed in the band's live shows over the years and you
could be forgiven for being a Wilco fan and being tired of hearing this
song performed live. But tonight the band brought something fresh to the
song. Tweedy didn't over-emphasize the song's refrain of 'Nothing! Nothing!'
to bulging-neck-veins hysteria as had become the norm. Instead the song
came off as simply as it originally did, an ode to youth and rock and
roll, every bit an equal to The Replacements' classic Unsatisfied. Drummer
Glenn Kotche brought new flourishes to the song percussively and bassist
John Stirratt made the whole thing sing with bass lines that brought an
earthiness heretofore unknown."
