The Boxer is a song found on the 1970 album ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. The song was released as a single 50 years ago. The rest of the record wasn’t released till later. By Elliot Sperber.

Some would rather be the hammer
I’d prefer to be the nail
Wouldn’t you rather get whacked
Just once
or twice and then rest
In some comfortable place
Than get smacked for the rest of your life
In the face?
As though there’s some glory
In being a hammer?
As though you were not just as much
of a tool?
And nails besides can escape with ease
You never see hammers like that
In the streets or sidewalks
Or off on a trail
Oh no I’d rather be the nail

Note: Elliot Sperber is a writer, attorney, and adjunct professor. He lives in New York City. Email him here and on twitter @elliot_sperber. The above piece was posted at CounterPunch.

  2. Eliot, why the beef with S&G? Sure, some people find them annoying, but I can think of many groups and artists who are far more annoying than S&G. Now if you were to write a poem like this about The Bee Gees..

  3. Sorry, but I just can’t match melody with lyrics if this truly is a new set of verses for “The Boxer”.

  4. Pure senseless bullshit. What is the point? Scaring that Sperber is a professor. Of what?

  5. If it were just an expression of annoyance over something overplayed, no biggie, that happens all the time. But this poem is presented here as if it has something to do with “The Boxer,” which it doesn’t. The line about the hammer or the nail is from “El Condor Pasa” on the same album. If there’s some point to this, please enlighten me.

  6. Hey BigO, will you publish MY poems about songs or artists I don’t like? “Motley Crew is pure doo doo.” “Bob Dylan needs a shot of penicilin.” “Leonard Cohen is really borin’.” “Neil Young thinks he’s Carl Jung.” Hey, this is fun…
