TENTACLE LOVE

The story and action might be comic-book inspired but when it comes to tentacle sex, Yo Kobayashi’s La Blue Girl: Revenge Of The Sex Demon King certainly delivers the goods. Stephen Tan reviews.
Hidden over 1,000 years ago, in the shadows of history, lies the legend of a war between two ninja clans - the Miroku Clan and the Shikima Clan. To turn the tide for the war between the two clans, the Shikima swore an oath to the demons of the Realm of Sex Fiends. This allowed the Shikima to become sex demons themselves, and thus destroy the Miroku Clan. The Miroku Clan’s last hope lies within the female ninja of the Bidou family. Using the power and blood of their Miroku ancestors, the Shikima are trapped in the Realm of Sex Fiends. Now, their evil power awakens. To the human world an envoy of Fear, sex monster Hanzaki, pays a visit.
The above preamble lays out the background but the operative word is Realm of Sex Fiends. Like a drop of water, Hanzaki travels from the Realm of Sex Fiends to our world and meets up with a couple having sex in their car. Hanzaki rapes and kills the woman. He also kills and adopts the appearance of the man in the car.
It’s the last day of school and summer holidays are just beginning. Students Miko, Misaki and Shizuka plan to stay the night at Misaki’s apartment. Taking a bath before the others arrive, Misaki is attacked and raped by Hanzaki. At the same time, Shizuka arrives. While waiting for Misaki to open the door, Shizuka appears to be overwhelmed by the moans and groans of Misaki being raped/having sex and collapses. Miko, a ninja from the Bidou family, turns up. Sensing an evil presence in the apartment, she decides to bring Shizuka home and consults her older sister Miyu.
Together with Miyu, the girls meet up the next day to spend a couple of days at a holiday villa with Misaki showing no recollection of being raped the previous evening. At the villa, Misaki promptly takes off her top and jumps into the pool but attacks Miko and Shizuka when they join her. Miko manages to subdue Misaki and brings her to her room. Later Misaki creeps into Shizuka’s room and begins having sex with the shaken Shizuka who quickly gives in.
Shizuka, who is now possessed by Hanzaki, goes to the pool and is followed by Miyu. But Hanzaki is too strong for Miyu and he takes her into his realm and rapes her. Miko follows and she too is defeated and raped by Hanzaki. The two sisters manage to free themselves from Hanzaki’s clutches and destroy the sex demon. However, the closing shot shows Miyu to be possessed by the demon.
Yo Kobayashi’s La Blue Girl: Revenge Of The Sex Demon King (1994) is based on the manga by Toshio Maeda, who created a sensation in the ’80s with Urotsukidoji (Legend Of The Overfiend). Actually, it was the anime - with its (demonic) tentacle rape sequence - that was sensational, so much so that a tentacle porn genre has sprung up among anime fans.
When it comes to tentacle rape, horror fans might recall the graphic sequence in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead but it’s par for the course for La Blue Girl. Still, director Yo Kobayashi has given a slight twist to the erotic scenes. While Misaki’s rape in the bathroom is pretty strong stuff, the rape scenes are preceeded by the tentacles squirting a greyish fluid onto the girl’s face, and usually into her mouth, thus rendering her unconscious or docilely amiable to sex. This notion of oral sex is further emphasised when the girls have the tentacles in their mouths.
Storywise, this isn’t so much a mess as a bit too simplistic. If Hanzaki is out to settle an old score, why pick on Misaki and then Shizuka before tackling the two sisters? Why not go for Miyu and Miko head on? And if Hanzaki had brought the two sisters to his realm, why is he alone? Where are the other demons that were shown at the beginning of the film?
Of course, unravelling the story becomes a moot point as scenes of Hanzaki tearing the clothes off the girls and then ravishing and raping them take precedence. There are lots of breast shots and the nipple shots of Misaki and Shizuka having sex tend to linger… which ultimately take the heat off the final showdown when the peekaboo netting of the girls’ ninja costumes gets shredded, to reveal even more breasts. But then, director Kobayashi draws the line on acid-shooting tits - that’s left to the other filmmakers in the Ninja Vixens series.
