THE BEACH BOYS
Texas 2012 [no label, 2CD]
Live at Verizon Theater, Grand Prairie, TX; April 26, 2012. Very good audience recording.

Fifty years of Beach Boys… Beach Boys fans from South-east Asia might want to make a beeline for Hong Kong for the band’s concert on August 25. And for many others, they will have to rely on fan recordings like this, so a big thank you to whotapes, who shared the show at The Traders’ Den. This is what whotapes noted:

I went mostly because who knows if you will ever get these hit makers perform together again and especially because of Brian Wilson being there. Just a fun all-round show. There was a 20-minute intermission so each set will fit nicely on a single CD. The show started almost without warning. I was not completely ready so you do hear a bit of rustling as I position my mics at the start. But it is finished before the real music starts.

And this is what Mike Powell of Rolling Stone commented on the group’s opening show at Tuscon, Arizona on April 24:

It’s not until a band like the Beach Boys runs through their hits back-to-back in rapid succession that you realize just how many hits they’ve had. Over the course of nearly two and a half hours, they played an astonishing 42 songs, many of them medley-style, with nearly no banter in between. Amid the most familiar stuff – “California Girls,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Good Vibrations” – were a healthy number of deep cuts and covers, including “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” and Phil Spector’s “Then He Kissed Me,” which Jardine probably wisely rephrased as “Then I Kissed Her.”

There were also two uncanny video appearances by Carl and Dennis Wilson, both of whom died years ago. (Dennis “sang” “Forever,” while Carl took on “God Only Knows,” a song Brian wrote for him on 1966’s Pet Sounds.) And about halfway through the second set, something new showed up: A reflective midtempo ballad called “That’s Why God Made the Radio” – a moment that, like so much of the band’s best music, elevated the adolescent to the divine.

And thanks to epresley for the artwork.

LINDA RONSTADT with COUNTRY GAZETTE
‘Tis A Gift [Bucky Beaver, 1CD]
Live at McCabe’s Guitar Shop, 1974 <strike>1972</strike>. Ex- SBD? very narrow stereo.

Some fans have listed this show as from 1974 but considering the songs played, the likely year is 1972 before Linda Ronstadt turned to country pop and soft rock. [As readers have commented below, the show is from 1974.] In between the giggles and the chatter, Ronstadt mentions a previous tour with Neil Young inside larger hockey rinks and also makes a sound to simulate the hard rock of Led Zeppelin, at the time growing in strength. Country stars must have felt nervous with the second British invasion already blowing into the US.

This show is a wonderful display of the richness of traditional country music, drawing from gospel to folk and the tunes of Bill Monroe and Hank Williams. Ronstadt graces them with her full bodied voice and energy. Country Gazette were purveyors of fine bluegrass and coined the term “new grass” when they amplified the music. The picking is still mighty fine.

BOB DYLAN AND THE BAND
The Complete Basement Tapes: From The Reels [no label, CD 7 and 8 of 11]
Recorded at “Big Pink”, West Saugerties, New York, 1967. This 11-CD set was released in 2001.

Philip Cohen notes:

This is the most complete Basement Tapes collection in circulation. This is not for audiophiles. It is for completists who want everything; warts and all.

Disc 7: These are the publishers’ acetates that circulated amongst musicians in the 1960s. “The Mighty Quinn” and these takes of “Too Much of Nothing” &and “Tears of Rage” are unreleased material, but as for all the other tracks on Disc 7, these are the same basic takes as heard on the official “The Basement Tapes” set, but they are different mixes with the original ragged introductions (the official releases fade up to conceal this), and without the overdubs heard on the official release. Some of the tracks, particularly towards the end of the disc do run a bit slow.

Disc 8: Tracks 4, 6, 7 ,9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 are genuine unreleased material. The other tracks are the undoctored, unedited versions of performances that later appeared (remix/overdubbed) on the official “The Basement Tapes” set.

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.

Notes from rec.music.dylan, August 2001:

In the time since this ‘fan project’ was completed, there have been a couple of other ‘Basement’ releases, one a 5 CDR set, nice quality, but lacking many tracks (…almost nothing from reel 1) emerged, and more recently the 4CD ‘Tree with Roots’ emerged. These have been carefully compared as well, and where appropriate, tracks were upgraded to the original 10CD set. Recently, someone else seems to have gotten hold of this set and and thinks that there were some other missing tracks (I’m not particularly convinced that reel 11 contains any new Basement tracks at all…) and added these tracks to reel #11.
He was 70. A BBC report said that was Dunn was in Japan for a series of concerts, and had played two shows on Saturday night. His friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour, said Dunn had died in his sleep. “Today I lost my best friend,” Cropper wrote on his Facebook page. “The world has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live”.
DAVE GRUSIN
Grusin Does Bernstein [no label, 2CD]
Live at Monterey Jazz Festival, Monterey, CA, Sept 19, 1997. Ex FM stereo.

The decade before the world saw the economy tumble and the Naughties brought on storm clouds were happier times. The Monterey Jazz Festival sprung back to life in 1997 to celebrate its 40th anniversary. One of the most delightful moments at the festival was Dave Grusin’s premiere of the release of his album “Dave Grusin Presents West Side Story”.

“It’s funny how this all came together, Monterey’s 40th, the ‘West Side Story’ 40th, almost in a symbiotic fashion,” was how Grusin remarked of the concert then. He had restarted a new record label with N2K and West Side Story was a major release for them. Grusin and Larry Rosen had previously established the GRP (Grusin-Rosen Productions) Record Company but had sold it off for a nice profit.

Grusin was enthusiastic about this show. “Since there were basically two 40th anniversaries, it made a lot of sense to combine them. And we’re going to have a hot band at Monterey - guys from both New York and LA, including Eric Marienthal, Bill Evans, Tom Scott, Jeff Clayton and Arturo Sandoval, with Patti Austin and Jonathan Butler doing the vocals.”

From his continuous onstage patter, you can tell Grusin was proud to have fathered this project. The performances are all solid, veering close to the original recording which is the way showtunes are appreciated. Not a beat out of step.

The show opened with West Side Story’s Something’s Coming. If only he had a crystal ball then, because now we’re all stuck in the Middle East. Meanwhile, enjoy this beautiful show. “I feel pretty, I feel pretty….”

JANIS JOPLIN
San Francisco 1963 [no label, 1CD]
Live at the California Coffee Gallery, San Francisco, CA; 1963. “Excellent SBD recording for the era.”

These tracks just surfaced and it’s thanks to kneesfudd for sharing them on Dime.

“Center Of The Universe”, Mr JohnK himself, has issued the ultimatum. Share before everyone who gives a damn is dead or can’t hear anymore.

kneesfudd also noted the following:

Warts: ALMOST NONE. I missed some dropouts and there are some non-removable ones. Occasional very tiny clicks in left channel.
Lower generation, better quality, clearer and less distorted than what circulates on “Blow All My Blues Away” and as “1962-08-10″.
Circulates as late 1962, early 1963 and 1962-08-10, but this version is simply labeled “1963″.
For a finer listening experience turn up the bass!

Thanks to the original taper & traders!.. This one was a lot of work. The reel had clearly been played quite a bit before it was digitised, but fortunately the signal on one side or the other was mostly intact and the highs were/are there. Anyway, the multitude of dropouts (that I noticed) were almost ALL seamlessly patched. This is one for the listening archives for sure. Was the TDK SA-XG 90 the heaviest cassette ever made? Sure feels like it. It’s about three times the weight of a Maxell XLII-90. A great early set from one of the voices of the last century. Cool it came from a SUPER HEAVY cassette.

Recording Information:
unknown mono reel-to-reel recorder > master mono reel-to-reel > DAT x1or2 generations > 1st(*) analog generation TDK SA-XG 90 cassette, Dolby off. (* call it what you will).

Playback 2012-05-01:
1st(*) generation TDK SA-XG 90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized > Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder > CD-RW > computer, EAC secure > wavs > Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, fades &/or glitches, dropouts, volume adjustments, no EQ) > CD Wave (track splits) > Trader’s Little Helper > yer ears. This one set a new mastering record for hours of work as it had a COMPLETE 2nd overhaul - hence the re-seed delay. However it is a better gem now & worth the wait. First uploaded week of 2012-05-11.

LED ZEPPELIN
Led Zeppelin II Sampler - Eeklair Multitrack Mixes [no label, 1CD]
Excellent soundboard.

In January 2012, Empress Valley put out a four-CD set, The Making Of Led Zeppelin II. There are four songs - Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, Ramble On, and What Is And What Should Never Be - one on each disc. And each disc has eight isolated tracks - from the multitrack master - featuring vocals, guitars, drums, bass and percussion.

It is likely Eeklair took a set of the multitracks and remixed them into this sampler.

This is what Eeklair noted:

Well, I’m throwing my hat into the ring. I think I would make a good steward of the Led Zeppelin Multitracks because…

bear in mind, the effects used such as delay and reverb are modern sounding. NO HISS REDUCTION was applied to these results…

Hope you like it Jimmy, it’s for you.

Eeklair also added:

I only have the four tunes, it’s up to whomsoever leaked the multitracks to deliver us anything more… It’s a labour of love, and I’m only too enthused to mix the stuff… Maybe soon Jimmy will unleash the rest of the album…

Thanks to Eeklair for the efforts and for sharing the tracks on Demonoid.

This is what music fan tmtomh commented at Demonoid:

Thanks for this - you clearly put a lot of hard work into it. Whole Lotta Love and WIAWSNB sound great - the full ending in WLL is really terrific. The album edit version of Heartbreaker, though, sounds just a little dull and rolled off, and both versions of Heartbreaker seem to have strange volume fluctuations around 0:45. Did you run into any particular challenges or difficulty when working with this track?

Another fan, iliketorock, posted:

Could you turn the BASS UP about 12db? I want break the windows out… Just finished the whole thing, Heartbreaker and no Living Loving Maid…WOW. RUN AWAY RUN AWAY.

As always, we welcome readers to send in their comments on these remixes.

ELVIS COSTELLO AND FRIENDS
Mill Valley 1989 [no label, 3CD]
Live at The Sweetwater, Mill Valley, CA; April 24, 1989. Very good to excellent soundboard.

Thanks to grner1 for the great effort and for sharing these tracks on Dime.

This is what grner1 noted:

Village Music was a little record store in Mill Valley, California and its owner, John Goddard, threw a lot of great anniversary parties at the tiny nearby club, The Sweetwater. This show is full of cool one-of-a-kind performances. This is the soundboard audio from a very decent quality two-camera shoot. This is likely to be an upgrade over everything that has previously circulated from this show. The first half is sourced from the VHS Hi-Fi “dubbing master” audio and the second half is from a DAT master. The DAT tape of the first half of the show is missing but the audio quality is similar on the VHS Hi-Fi. I attempted to list the lineups for each song after watching the video closely but since there are so many changes there may be some minor errors.

This is longer (none of the other circulating versions contains the opening Nick Lowe solo set and the video is also missing a lot of Elvis Costello’s solo set). This audio is also at the correct pitch, while the previous one is more than a semitone too fast and much thinner-sounding.

Lineage: Two TDK HD-XPro T-120 VHS tapes. There are a few video breaks for approximately 20 seconds each which were replaced with color bars. The audio is seamless with the first half from the VHS Hi-Fi soundtrack and the rest from a DAT master. A few seconds have been spliced in from an alternate downloaded soundboard source. Since all the breaks start between songs, very little of the music is missing as the video masters change tapes.

Transfer: Sony WV-DR7 > Sony DVMC-DA2 Media Converter (DV Hardware Codec Converter) > Final Cut Pro > Pro Tools (minor “nip and tuck” edits and normalization. No noise reduction or equalization).

Audio versions of this show have also circulated as being from the 29th, but that is incorrect (there was a Grateful Dead show on the 29th).

Also, here’s an excerpt from an interview with Elvis Costello and Jerry Garcia about the Sweetwater show, taken from Musician magazine, March 1991, posted at gratefulbreed.blogspot.com:

Elvis Costello: Certainly a candidate for the world’s greatest record store is Village Music, in Mill Valley. Every year John Goddard has a party for his friends and customers, and he always has a really good bill of people. So on the twenty-first anniversary, I did a show with Nick Lowe, and he invited James Burton and Jerry Scheff, who’d played with me on the road. I did my little set, Nick did his set and then it was a free-for-all; Charles Brown did a piece, and people were getting summoned to the stage. I was standing in the corridor when I suddenly heard, “Jerry Garcia to the stage!” And, emboldened by several margaritas, I decided to join him.

Jerry Garcia: Not only that, but it was one of those situations where I had the choice of playing either Elvis’ guitar, which is low and it’s stiff, and the strings are quite wide as well, and all this confusing script, or of playing Burton’s guitar, which is strung with spider webs. I mean it’s the absolutely lightest you can string a guitar and still get a sound out of it. I’d take Burton’s and play a note on it and it goes “spack.” So I opted to play Elvis’ guitar as the lesser of two evils. [*laughter*] And I vowed I would never go to another one of those shows without my own.

Elvis: It was a whole Three Stooges routine - “Here, you take my guitar,” “No, I’ll take your guitar.” I think I had Burton’s old Telecaster for half a song, and James had my old Martin acoustic which wasn’t cranked up so he couldn’t solo - and Jerry’s struggling with my guitar. But once everybody got settled we managed to struggle through a couple of Hank Williams songs. Like any sort of jam thing it inevitably came to degenerate towards lots of blues. But we managed a few songs with changes.

Jerry: A pretty high level of jam-sessionry really, considering what it was. Really fun. And Elvis’ solo set was phenomenal, I thought. That’s one of those things that I can’t do at all, just playing the guitar and singing. You’re so solid with that, you don’t miss a band. I always feel like I’m missing a band.

SAMMY HAGAR
Red Rocker [Power Gate 072, 2CD]
Live at Harvey’s Outdoor Amphitheater, Lake Tahoe, NV; August 13, 2005. Includes a Montrose reunion. Excellent soundboard.

The late guitarist Ronnie Montrose might have created a buzz when he played on Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey but fans will always associate him with Sammy Hagar. The vocalist was in the original Montrose band when it was formed in 1973 and he left in February 1975.

The highlight of this show is the reunion between Hagar and Montrose, and there is no let up in Hagar’s vocals. Here is a power-packed show that hard rock fans could have easily overlooked.

Ronnie Montrose died of prostate cancer in March 2012; and Sammy Hagar did play together with Montrose in Sacramento in 2003. Listening to the friendly banter at this Lake Tahoe show, it is not difficult to see why Hagar wrote these words in memory of Montrose:

[I would like Montrose to be remembered] as one of the pioneers of American heavy/hard rock. And certainly, one of the great hard rock guitar players. But he was more than that - he was really versatile. But if you’re going to remember him for anything, put on that first Montrose record. The only positive I can grab onto is the fact that the music will live on. It’s a shame to lose Ronnie and I’m so sorry for his loved ones. Rest in peace.

BOB DYLAN AND THE BAND
The Complete Basement Tapes: From The Reels [no label, CD 5 and 6 of 11]
Recorded at “Big Pink”, West Saugerties, New York, 1967. This 11-CD set was released in 2001.

Philip Cohen notes:

This is the most complete Basement Tapes collection in circulation. This is not for audiophiles. It is for completists who want everything; warts and all.

Click on the highlighted tracks to download the MP3s (224 kbps). As far as we can ascertain, these tracks have never been officially released on CD.

Please Do Not Hammer The Links. Due to the size of some of the files, please be very patient when downloading the tracks. It could be that the server was very busy. The tracks should still be around. Please try again later.
The rest of the series will be shared in the coming weeks.
