NORAH JONES
Paris 2012 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Studio 105, Maison de la Radio, Paris, France; April 20, 2012. Excellent FM broadcast.

Norah Jones’s new album, Little Broken Hearts, has a street date of May 1, 2012. On April 15, the entire album was streamed online on NPR. To preview her album, Jones gave a treat to her French fans and performed the entire album (Disc 1 below) live on this radio show.

According to the wikipedia, the cover art for the album was inspired from the poster to the film Mudhoney. Jones was recording the album at Danger Mouse’s studio and saw the poster on the wall. She said, “Brian [Burton] has this great collection of Russ Meyer posters in his studio. And this particular one… was right over the couch where I sat every day. I always was looking at it and thinking ‘that’s so cool I want to look like her!’ I remember staring at the poster the whole time we made the record. It’s a great visual.” The title of the album (and most of the tracks) allude to a recent break-up.

Initial response to the album has been positive and the tracks are indeed an entertaining listen, despite the subject matter.

Adam Kivel of consequenceofsound.net wrote: “Lyrically, this is a breakup album, but the album is anything but one-note, finding solace in a handful of different reactions. For example, album opener “Good Morning” works twinkling synths and shivering violins into a breathy realization, while “Say Goodbye” is the first hint of angst or aggression. Jones’ voice is sweet enough to sing a cutesy line like, “It’s alright, it’s okay, I don’t need you anyway,” without it having even a hint of going over the top. The latter song is as pure and twee as pop gets, the chugging bass, skipping drums, and Jones coos over the top like she’s been making this kind of music for ages.”

And Robert Copsey commented at digitalspy.co.uk: “Jones sings of heartbreak throughout with more contempt than we’ve ever heard from her before… Her angst reaches its most unnerving on ‘Take It Back’ and ‘She’s 22′ - the latter a barely-there ballad in which she asks: “Does she make you happy?” Her stages of post-relationship grief come to a climax on penultimate track ‘Miriam’; a moody and atmospheric number with just a hint of menace that conjures up images of a pain-stricken Jones clutching to a bottle of gin as she unpicks the details of her lover’s affair. It might be dark, but this stunning collection of anguish is the brightest she’s shined in a long time.”
