TOWER OF POWER - HEMPSTEAD 1974 [ROCCO PRESTIA R.I.P. 1951 - 2020]

ROCCO PRESTIA R.I.P. 1951 - 2020

Tower of Power bassist and fingerstyle funk master Rocco Prestia has died on September 29 at the age of 69. Prestia had been battling various illnesses since 2001 - in 2014, he underwent a “lifesaving” kidney transplant. Tower of Power bandleader Emilio Castillo confirmed the news on the band’s official Facebook page, writing: “Our dear “Rocco” passed away last night, peacefully with his family by his side at a hospice in Las Vegas.

“As a bass player he was totally unique and as a person he was one of a kind. He fought a long fight over the last 20 years and now he’s with the Lord and heaven is his home. To say that Francis Rocco Prestia was a huge part of the Tower of Power sound is a gross understatement. When people listened to Tower of Power it was always Rocco that they walked away talking about and he had a major impact on the music world.” - guitarworld.com

TOWER OF POWER
Hempstead 1974 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead; May 14, 1974. Very good to excellent Pre-FM.

Former Tower Of Power guitarist, Bruce Conte (right), was diagnosed with leukemia a few months ago. Conte is also an insulin-dependant diabetic and has been dealing with health issues for years. On towerofpower.com, Conte wrote: “The meds are very expensive but the good news is that I can stay alive as long as I continue taking them. I don’t have health insurance because of being diabetic. I am starting to get some help from some of my friends to get me through these hard times. I appreciate any help given.”

Thanks to Dave who shared this funky 1974 show on the net in 2006. (Guitarist Bruce Conte was most likely in the lineup as he was in the group from 1972 to 1979.) Dave posted: “I got it from the audio engineer who worked the show. If you only want one show by Tower Of Power, this is it!”
