NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE
Austin 2012 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Zilker Park, Austin, TX; October 13, 2012. Excellent web stream?

Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s current tour continue to charge along.

Here are some comments at thrasherswheat.org:

It’s obvious that Poncho and Billy are fully aware that Ramada Inn may be one of the best songs Neil ever wrote, and it’s obviously a blast for them to play it. Poncho is pushing Neil - something I don’t recall before. But the band appears to actually be challenging Neil to take it to a higher level - love it. LUV IT. - Anonymous

You just missed what may be the best version of Down By The River ever recorded - ever. - Anonymous

This is what Hector Saldana blogged at mysanantonio.com:

One of rock’s greatest icons, a symbol of ’60s hope and a hero to punk and grunge rockers, Neil Young took the Bud Light Stage with his garage band, Crazy Horse, and unapologetically jammed over extended and inspired set. Donning a Willie Nelson cap (before throwing it into the crowd after two songs) and dressed in a T-shirt, ragged jeans and armed with his battered signature black Gibson Les Paul electric guitar, Young played with fire, opening with “Love and Only Love,” a relentless two-chord workout followed by the Civil War death saga “Powderfinger.”

Nothing was as haunting and hopeful than “Walk Like a Giant,” its inspirational, sometimes broken tone born of weary wisdom about political winds changing. For longtime fans, Young delivered the acoustic “The Needle and the Damage Done” and stinging electric stabs at “Cinnamon Girl” and “Down By the River” - and his mantra “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).”

  3. well while it may not offer many new songs from the new cd that we dont have in sbd quality already.. it is another superb quality recording of this tour that isnt an audience recording so how can we not want it? some of us only collect fm’s tv’s and sbd’s and the like. course they miss out on some amazing recordings but ppl are entitled to collect whatever they wish. this is definitely one i am happy to have in my collection.
still wish farm aid from the saturday prior to central park would surface. it was brdcst. why is it so hard to find?

  9. speaking of farm aid.. if anyone is interested in the bridge school performances… the first nite neil set is on youtube in one place 63mins in mint audio. not as a video however. the audio is a sbd feed tho. the gnr feed was removed but they did 7 songs and individually 4 of them remain up by different people. i havent yet found 3 of the songs they did. eddie vedder opened up for gnr unexpectedly and did 2 songs. both of his songs are up and all these 6 songs are available on youtube in sbd quality. neil did 9 songs btw. his set was as follows -
    Love And Only Love
    Powderfinger
Born In Ontario (w/someone on Pump Organ)
The Needle And The Damage Done (solo)
    Twisted Road (solo)
    Singer Without A Song (piano)
    Ramada Inn
Like A Hurricane (w/Poncho on Pump Organ)
Rockin’ In The Free World (w/entire lineup except axl rose)
the date was 10-20 and the location was the shoreline amphitheater mountainview ca in case anyone didnt know.

at the farm aid show on 9-22 neil did only 5 songs.
    1.Country Home
    2.Ramada Inn
    3.Mr. Soul
    4.Homegrown(with Willie Nelson)
    5.Like a Hurricane

these songs are available in audience recordings on youtube. some in superb quality. they were brdcst on tv and radio.

  10. Am I the only one who thinks the new material is atrocious?

By Brian on Oct 24, 2012

  11. Brian if you are referring to Americana , I agree wholeheartedly , however,I give Neil tremendous props for continuing to re-invent himself. He does NOT rest on his laurels and constantly strives to change and learn. Nothing wrong with that at all and over a lengthy career such as his it isn`t unusual to have favourite times in his music.
So many “classic Rock” musicians continue to rehash old material but Neil is always on the edge , the cusp of something new. he isn`t just fading away……Neil Young , long may you run.

  12. i think psych pill is fantastic stuff. i loved the 37min jam that neil allowed us to have a bunch of months back. i really love the live psych pill tracks we have heard from the shows hes been doing this tour but then im crazy about the long extended jam thing. there are heavy doses of blues in there and lots of improvization and when neil goes off on a tangent and the others dont seem sure exactly where hes headed the way they keep up and jam with him is what blows me away. thats the part of what i love most about collecting live music.. especially the tracks that are 7mins or more. imagine my joy when i saw walk like a giant was 15-24mins long.

  17. i like the new stuff.. saw him in alabama on this tour.. WALK LIKE A GIANT was a highlight!

the only difference in the set list was that DOwn by the River was replaced..by

    singer without a song

    and
    Mr. Soul
Roll another number for the road
    were the encores

my 16 year old son hasn’t heard ‘everything’ neils catalog and he loved all the new stuff.. sure — it would have been nice to have heard a few more of the oldies.. but it was a good mix and an incredible SOUNDING show as well as a hilarious presentation with the guys in the white lab coats.. some cool ‘flashbacks’ on the video screens too..

also.. there’s CRAZY HORSE and then there’s the rest of the NEIL catalog.. i thought it was a good nod to the rest of the CATALOG that he pulled out “needle”..

only thing that would have topped it for me would have been

    TONIGHT”S the NIGHT!
