LOU REED
New York 1979 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the McMillan Theater, Columbia University, New York, NY; September 21, 1979. Good to very good audience recording.

Thanks to djhamma for sharing the tracks at Dime.

djhamma noted:

This was the rehearsal show for the Autumn 1979 European leg of Lou Reed’s “The Bells” Tour, and even more significantly, this was a historic show for fans of Suzanne Vega. Suzanne has repeatedly regaled audiences and interviewers alike with tales of a date who took her to her first rock concert, a 1979 Lou Reed perfomance.

Though she claims she was appalled by his on-stage behavior - swearing and flicking lit cigarettes into the audience - the show still impressed her: “Suddenly it hit me that I could write about things I had experienced without softening up the edges or apologizing for it or putting it in a nice package necessarily,” recalled Vega in the Los Angeles Times.

And this was the very show that gave Suzanne that revelation, made her a fan of Mr. Reed, and eventually influenced her composition of her most notable hit, “Luka” - two decades later, Suzanne admitted she “was listening to Lou Reed’s ‘Berlin’ album on the day that I wrote ‘Luka’, probably to sharpen and focus myself.”

The venue was renamed Miller Theater for Kathryn Bache Miller during a 1988 renovation.

By DROPICK SARGE on Jan 17, 2013

  24. Hey everybody, DROPKICK SARGES message is in capitals it must be real, Im so sorry for your lose DROPKICK maybe it’s because on all your corrasondances with her she felt the capitals were you yelling, instead of you trying to create your own unique calling card. Like the Fonze had his “Heyyyyy” and Gomar Pyle had his “Golly” you have your capitals, how dare anyone infringe on this uniqueness, I think you should try to copy-write it!

  30. I’ll keep it simple.
Big O amigos, thanks for the Lou Reed. Heroin live is always welcome, especially as the cold sets in on a wintery Thompson Saturday sunset.
Be well and keep them coming.

  31. I was at this show, and I can’t believe it’s posted on BigO. I was 14 years old, and lived nearby. Our little gang of nuisance kids liked to skateboard and cause trouble on the Columbia campus. One evening, we were out after supper, and our parents let us probably because it was the 70’s in NYC, life was a lot less serious then. Somehow we sneaked in or talked our way into this show. It was my first rock show, and all I remember was being in the balcony seeing Lou holding the mic stand. It’s stuck in my head all these years, after many, many other shows. The first time makes a big impression. Thanks for posting it, BigO!

  32. I Googled Stuart Heinrich and it seems like besides this time period with Lou Reed he didn’t appear anywhere else. (One song on 1978’s “Street Hassle”, on 1978’s “Live: Take No Prisoners”, on 1980’s “Growing Up in Public”) I wonder what happened to him.

they served beer in the hall. smoking still allowed. LR kept rejecting out of tune guitars. fans rushed toward the stage near and one put her face in his blue-jeaned crotch. LR ripped off her black beret and threw it into crowd.

  40. Marty Fogel was no longer part of the band when this show took place. Also, the drummer is Doane Perry - not Michael Suchorsky. Perry would later play again with Lou on The Blue Mask; following that he joined Jethro Tull.
