BLUE OYSTER CULT - PROVIDENCE 1974 (Allen Lanier R.I.P. 1946-2013)

March 14, 2013 – 4:30 am

ALLEN LANIER R.I.P. 1946-2013

Founding Blue Oyster Cult keyboardist and guitarist Allen Lanier died on August 14, 2013 after being hospitalized with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He was 66. Apart from a two year absence in the ’80s, Lanier was with BOC from their inception in 1967 until his retirement in 2006. He co-wrote several songs for the group, including True Confessions, In Thee, Tenderloin, and Lonely Teardrops. reported that in November 2012, Lanier rejoined his former bandmates on stage for the last time at a special New York concert commemorating the release of a career-spanning box set. Lead singer Eric Bloom posted the following: “My great friend Allen Lanier has passed… It was Allen who heard some old college band tapes of mine and suggested I get a shot as the singer in 1968. A lot of great memories, over 40 years’ worth. Maybe he’s playing a tune with Jim Carroll right now.”

Providence 1974 [Dan Lampinski Recording, 1CD]

Live at the Providence Civic Center, Providence, RI; February 21, 1974. Master audience recording taped by Dan Lampinski.

Here are the Blue Oyster Cult opening for Black Sabbath and previewing tracks such as Dominance And Submission, Flaming Telepaths and ME 262 from their then forthcoming album, Secret Treaties (released April 1974).

Comment at “1974 was a significant year for Blue Oyster Cult, marking as it did the appearance of what many people consider… to be the band’s most significant record, Secret Treaties…”

Thanks to djscomics for sharing the lossless tracks at Dime site. Above all, thanks to Dan Lampinski, Carl Morstadt (who mastered the tracks), Kev and the rest of team Lampinski. And also to ShaReeF for keeping the show alive at HungerCity.

A note on Dan Lampinski: Dan recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ’ing has been done to any of the transfers.

Click on the highlighted tracks to download the MP3s (192 kbps). As far as we can ascertain, these tracks have never been officially released on CD.

  5. this show is almost two years before agents of fortune, josef, so that’s why there’s no (don’t fear) the reaper. if you don’t have chicago 91, bigo offered it in summer 2011. (don’t fear) the reaper and godzilla are on it. they also offered providence 75 and nyc 2012, their 40th anniversary show.

also, i’ve seen it listed as cities on flame, but i put cities on flame with rock and roll.

By Ed Saad on Mar 14, 2013

  6. here you go, josef. sorry, i meant cleveland not chicago. this is a great show.

By Ed Saad on Mar 14, 2013

  7. Ed, sadly, the older show above has some tracks (”Astronomy” and “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” among them) hosted on MU (now defunct) and 4Shared (membership only). While I’m sure I got this show back in the day, it’d be sweet if Big O could update the links and repost in conjunction with this show. (And so newer guests had a shot at it as well… :)

No negativity towards our generous hosts, they continue to rock my world (this week being especially excellent I must say)!

Thanks for all you do, Big O guys and gals!

By golgo hakase on Mar 14, 2013

  8. hey golgo, are you sure? i’d looked here, and the setlist appears to be accurate. maybe you mean providence, ri 2.25.75. now bigo offered it last year in may, and it has astronomy still no (don’t fear) the reaper, though.

i have a killer and complete boc show from free trade hall, manchester, england 1975. maserati gt (i ain’t got you) is on it. i got ever boc show off this blog, except the two i already had.

still my all time favorite boc show is bonds international casino, nyc, ny 6.16.81. all the hits minus astronomy. it’s a vinyl boot that goes by the thing!. i got it 5 years ago off some blog. it’s still out there, if you look for it. i also have the spit club, levittown, ny 6.15.81 too.

the above providece show makes 66 boc shows for me. :)

By Ed Saad on Mar 14, 2013

  9. hey bigo, it should be intro / the red and the black and cities on flame with rock and roll / drum solo. i’m on the last song now then i’m working on another marillion-hammersmith odeon show. fish era marillion shows are always appreciated. i have seven.

By Ed Saad on Mar 14, 2013

  10. Thanks Ed, but for me is every show of BÖC great :-), I´m great fan. Show from Cleveland of course I have…
    Best Josef

  11. hey josef, yeah, boc rules. if you’re looking for a specific show, let me know. i might can find it. some of the links have expired.

there’s some good shows on soundaboard, and i got a few off guitar forum. when i see a show i don’t have, i get it! i’ve been collecting their shows, since 2008. however, my collection got even bigger in 2011 and 2012. i thought, i had enough at 16 then i just kept getting them an zeppelin. i wish bigo could still offer their shows. i have 58 so it’s ok.

hey bigo, here’s boc show i am having trouble finding. my understanding is it’s the only time they played stone of love. maybe you could offer this one. rudy sarzo rules. i have several boc shows with him on bass.

  14. i see rocket got my request. i was looking for that boc show too and manchester 78. the flac’s are on guitar forum, but mp3’s are easier for me.

i love hrc. got tons of boc and thin lizzy shows on there, dropkick sarge. thin lizzy is another band i collect. i have 17 shows. them, zeppelin and boc are my 3 favorite rock bands.

By Ed Saad on Mar 14, 2013

By DROPKICK SARGE on Mar 14, 2013

  16. thanks dropkick sarge! yes, i like the stones too with mick taylor. leeds is killer! not really collecting the stones now, but i have a few shows i got from here. the ones ones i got were el macombo, the good quality one from st kilda, melbourne, australia and bangalore, india. probably my favorite stones show is the keith richards benefit concert.

i like free too. got 3 shows offered here. a couple i passed on. i like the sheffield, england show. i also like the 3 bad company shows i got here and paul rodgers’ peace show. great stuff.

By Ed Saad on Mar 14, 2013

  17. good morning ed, saw your note here about the keith richards benefit show.
It was held at the oshawa civic auditorium in my hometown.
there were two shows, both are available, when they were selling tickets, as you know it was a benefit for the CNIB[canadian institute for the blind]because Keith was really moved by this young blind gal /fan that would go for show to show all on her own to see her favourites.
There were reports at the time of fans[?] pretending to be blind to buy tickets as one of the performances was for the blind only.
I know a few cats that were backstage at this event and they said it was like a blizzard of snow if you get my drift. Lots of time this show has “Toronto” as the venue but it really was held here in Oshawa , about 30 miles east of toronto.

By sluggo on Mar 14, 2013

  18. hey sluggo, i think, that’s accurate about the blind girl and fans. i believe it was in their vh1 legend documentary.

now i thought the reason the stones played that show was because keith got busted for heroin possession at customs so reduce his sentence and no jail time he’d get a walk by playing two shows with the stones and new barbarians opening up. yeah, john belushi did the intro. i love the new barbarians-before they make me run on that set.

By Ed Saad on Mar 14, 2013

  19. Hey Ed and Dropkick sarge, thank you very much for links with BÖC shows, especially for HRC - 33 shows - great!

By Chris Walken on Mar 16, 2013

  21. @Dropkick Sarge - great comment regarding Ed and getting dates exact, and Ed’s wonderful, friendly attitude.

Hats off to you, Ed, you are always friendly and helpful and sharing information, and never being mean to anyone. it’s folks like you that make this site great - sure, the shows are what we come to download, but it’s nice to have some friendly chats and learn or share information. :)

By RedAndTheBlack on Mar 18, 2013

  22. @Ed and @sluggo - you are both correct about the Keith Richards benefit gig for the blind - it WAS Oshawa, and it WAS a gig ordered by the judge.

After the blind girl told the judge about how she would go to the Stones shows, and that Keith ALWAYS made sure that one of the Stones’ staff would drive her home, or get a cab for her and make sure she arrived safely.

The judge figured that he couldn’t be all that bad a person if he would take care of the girl in that way, and knew that the heavy jail sentence that Keith could have faced wasn’t apporpriate (Keith wasn’t a dealer, wasn’t a violent criminal, etc), so his punishment was probration (he may have been fined, too, can’t remember) and was ordered to play the benefit shows.

By RedAndTheBlack on Mar 18, 2013

  23. thanks the red and the black. boc!!! i got academy of music, nyc, ny 10.5.74. it’s a great boc show. however, i think, my ipod is old cause it won’t play on it. i have a ufo, srv, zeppelin, one more boc show and 3 metal albums with the same issue. i have to play them in itunes or burn them and make audio cd’s to listen to them. i have no idea why but installing new versions of itunes hasn’t helped. if i get an ipad later, they will probably play on it. i still keep the shows cause they play fine in itunes.

i’m happy to post the link for the above boc show, if you’re interested.

i wish bigo would offer thin lizzy-hammersmith odeon 11.26.81. snowy white rules. i saw him play with roger waters at philips arena, atlanta, ga 11.18.10. i have it on two cd-r’s! bigo gave me the torrent, and my friend downloaded it for me. anyway, going back to thin lizzy, i have 11.27.81. i got it in january. it’s one some boot called the boys are back in town with another show from hitchin, england 83. i think, it was john sykes first show.

By Ed Saad on Mar 18, 2013

  24. Hey Ed, Your taste in music is as great as your posts. Keep em’ coming. Best

    By Bill H. on Mar 18, 2013

  25. Hey Ed, sorry to be late getting back. Had a busy weekend!

Yeah, I was referencing this link:
and some of the songs look like this:

Track 103. Dominance And Submission (10.3MB - visit the html page to download the track)
Track 103. Dominance And Submission (megaupload link)

Track 201. Astronomy (16.0MB - visit the html page to download the track)
    Track 201. Astronomy (megaupload link)

BigO used to distribute some of the larger files to other services so as to not overload their own servers. This show has a couple like that and the links no longer work (MU) or the site changed to members only (4Shared). I just can’t keep memberships at all these file locker services, of course.

Again, not a big deal for those of use who’ve been here for a while. And I know our hosts are super busy putting up new content for us all the time. So, just an FYI, I guess, for newer users checking out this old show.

All the best, everyone. We haven’t had such a friendly discussion this long in quite some time. It’s pretty refreshing!

By golgo hakase on Mar 25, 2013

  26. hey golgo, if you or any new users want this show and don’t feel like waiting, it’s on hrc.

yeah, i got a few new boc shows. i now have 71. after i got providence 74 from here, i got poughkeepsie 87 from hrc. great one! today i got iheartradio theater, nyc, ny 12.17.12. it’s a great one. i like the interview. i also got 12.7.12 from penn’s peak, jim thorpe, pa, and harvest fest, hanover park, il sept 2002. it’s a great one, but it won’t play on my ipod either. i played it intunes friday. i have their 2008 halloween show from penn’s peak with rudy sarzo on bass. killer! if you want any of these, let me know. i am happy to share links with other boc shows.

i’ll tell you, bigo, if you could offer iron maiden-rock am ring 2003, that’d be good. it’s missing a song on hrc, and everybody else who has it has dead links. it’s not been officially released. it was a rockpalast broadcast. i have metalica rock am ring 2006. it’s a good one, and they played master of puppets in its entirety. i’ve had it years. i just keep stuff.
