BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS
A Smokeyroom Dub Collection 1974-1980 [unknown Japan dbl vinyl]
This collection is wrongly attributed to have been mixed by Japanese percussionist Pecker and members of the Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1979. These are out-of-print 7 and 12-inch mixes. Ex SBD stereo.
In the text that accompanied this item, it was mentioned that Marley met Japanese percussionist Pecker in Jamaica in 1979 and the fruits of their labor was released exclusively in Japan as two separate LPs in 1980. Here’s the text in full and unedited:
“collection is mix up of 7″ & 12″ record’s & Dub’s And Dub Plate’s… Hence Title ! Ihave re-titled this by the way not much just added year’s 74-80 for that is time that these mix’s was recorded or mixed… also on each track you will notice each track’s origin from 7″ or dub plate etc… you will see from set list below. also in lookin’ more intoo this mix up i found some nice info about these “pecker mix’s” and here is info & thank you too www. for it:
‘An amazing but true story about an experimental dub session organized by BOB MARLEY in Jamaica in 1979!!! In 1979 during a visit to Japan, Bob Marley met the acclaimed Japanese percussionist Pecker. Pecker, a big fan of reggae, convinced Marley to bring top Japanese musicians (mostly members of The Yellow Magic Orchestra) to Jamaica to mix it up with the cream of Jamaican reggae artists, to jam and play out in informal dub sessions at both Channel One and Tuff Gong Studios. The astounding results were released only in Japan on two separate LP’s in 1980′.”
Whoever posted the above created the wrong impression that this has anything to do with the Pecker mixes. The Pecker mixes are out-of-print. There were two albums released by Pecker in Japan. They are Pecker Power and Instant Rasta. Both were finally brought to the USA by the ROIR label and initially released on cassette only (as far as we can tell). Both LPs were combined into one cassette, 21st Century Dub. This item is long out-of-print and from the listed titles differ completely from this Smokeyroom Dub Collection. [Ed: Only two of Pecker’s mixes are found in this collection.]
Our fave track on this excellent compilation is the opening song from the second disc, I Know A Place. Marley comes so close in playing the familiar melody on a couple of times but turns left just at the right time. Tantalising. Thanks to the fans who made this available on the net.

JAPANESE REGGAE AND THE PECKER MIXES
Japanese reggae is reggae music originating from Japan. The first reggae band to perform in Japan was The Pioneers who toured in 1975. However it was not until 1979, when Jamaican singer Bob Marley visited Japan on holiday that reggae would gain momentum. Marley wanted to attend a concert by the Flower Travellin Band and when looking for information, he met famed Japanese percussionist “Pecker” who informed him that the group had already disbanded. The two became good friends, and Pecker suggested to Marley a collaboration between acclaimed Japanese and Jamaican artists. This suggestion resulted in the albums Pecker Power, and Instant Rasta being recorded in Jamaica at “Channel One” and “Tuff Gong Studio” in 1980. The albums featured Japanese artists Minako Yoshida (吉田美奈子?), Ryuuichi Sakamoto (坂本龍一?), Naoya Matsuoka (松岡直也?), Shigeharu Mukai (向井滋春?), and Akira Sakata (坂田明?), alongside Jamaican artists Augustus Pablo, Sly & Robbie, The Wailers, Rico Rodriguez, Carlton Barrett and Marcia Griffiths. These two albums influenced both Japanese and Jamaican artists, and are regarded as spreading reggae to Japan. - Wikipedia (click here)

Two tracks cut out due to there mass official status on many official albums.
The latest release from the Bob Marley camp is In Dub Vol 1, a collection of hard-to-find dubs. It was released last October on CD but previously only available as a digital download. The shoddy CD packaging offers no information about how these recordings came about. Might as well be a bootleg. Buy it here.

Personal insults to someone you’ve never met?
Why? What does that gain other than my complete disdain (although you’ll note that I refuse to respond in kind).
This will be my final comment on this utterly broken communications medium: one which promises so much but delivers nothing but crass, insensitive and pointless bilge.
Well done.

So sorry to see you go, Andrew, you will be missed.
Sorry to have gained your complete disdain.
Sorry that you don’t realize how much we don’t care that you are leaving us.
Well done yourself.
I suppose you’ll appear under another name as soon as Darth gets to the “B” section of the dictionary.
