Nelson Mandela: An International Tribute for a Free South Africa 1990 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Wembley Stadium, London, UK; April 16, 1990. Very good to excellent FM broadcast.

South Africa’s first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela died on December 5, 2013 in Johannesburg. He was 95. Mandela had been receiving medical treatment for the last three years for a prolonged lung infection and for the last six months had been critically ill. In a statement on South African national TV, South Africa president Jacob Zuma said Mandela had “departed” and was at peace.

While Mandela’s efforts cannot be denied - he was jailed for 27 years - this John Pilger article adds a bit more perspective to Mandela’s legacy.

From the wikipedia:

Nelson Mandela: An International Tribute for a Free South Africa was a concert that took place on April 16, 1990 at Wembley Stadium, London, and was broadcast to more than 60 countries. It was held two months after the release of Nelson Mandela from a South African apartheid prison and was regarded by Mandela as an official international reception. Mandela was on stage for 45 minutes, of which the first eight minutes was taken up by a standing ovation. He called for sanctions against South Africa to be maintained and for people across the world to continue pressing for apartheid’s abolition.

The success of an earlier concert, a 70th birthday-tribute concert to Mandela in June 1988, held while the South African leader was still in prison, and the growing likelihood that he would be released reasonably soon led Mandela’s lawyer to ask Tony Hollingsworth, impresario and producer of the first concert, to organise the 1990 concert.

In 1962 Mandela was arrested, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. Mandela served 27 years in prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was granted in 1990.

Thanks to frankvink who recorded the tracks and shared them at Dime. frankvink noted: “There were many more acts on that day but I think this is all I have - I’ve edited out what I didn’t like at the time of recording…”

  5. Glad he’s dead. And the fact that he lived to the ripe old age of 197 (or whatever it was) is further proof that the devil takes good care of HIS children…

  6. Notice too that NONE of these artists listed here who originally supported his cause has EVER gone back over there and reported on the massive crime epidemic that has mysteriously swept over the land. Nor have they bothered to notice that South Africa the child rape capital of the world. Plus 1 in every 7 people there are infected with HIV. One of the highest rates in the world, and ALL since the fall of apartheid. But at least we got them running the show now. Whether they are capable of doing it or not is apparently not the least bit important… to some people. : )

Labels like “troll” are a poor substitute for opposing facts when it comes to a difference of political opinion, barge. You can choose to look the other way concerning the ones I’ve posted above concerning your sub-human simianiod friend Mandella there. But you can never say again that you didn’t know.

  17. It seems very odd that while the majority of the rest of the world mourns the passing of one great man, there has to be one very misguided dummy trying to be noticed.
Looks like you have no support for your idiotic posts aaron.

  20. if u dont care what hes saying.. why are u responding to it? the more attention u give to it the more ppl look at what he said wondering what it was he said that got u so riled up in the first place. obviously the guy doesnt have a clue and who knows if he really believes what hs typed. it doesnt matter. let him just disappear.
there are some nice rare tracks coming out i guess early next year in celebration of mandiba’s life. u2 did a pair of songs and one really amazing one is -

U2 - Breathe (acoustic Mandela version) (ordinary love b-side) 2013

i highly recommend this one. it was originally recorded in 09 but this new version appears in the film. i might have sent thru a link to it elsewhere on here yesterday if yall were paying attention. my copy came out fabulous. its 4mins long and almost 2 meg in size.

He’s following your lead. At least he didn’t write a 500 word blathering cursing rant saying he doesn’t care.

    “if yall were paying attention.”
We were, we didn’t respond because…..
