Free EPs Vol 1 and 2 [Exowax Recordings, 1CD]

Here is one musician who is not afraid of internet sharing and also actively promotes it.

Mike Keneally might not be a familiar name but for this 51-year-old American guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist and composer, Allmusic says: “With his wide-ranging talents and ability to be creative in almost any musical situation, Keneally is the leading progressive rock genius of the post-Zappa era.”

The Zappa-reference is not without merit.

Keneally’s stint in the Zappa touring band was short-lived with the early cancellation of the 1988 tour and Zappa’s death in 1993. Keneally moved on from the elder Zappa’s band to work with the eldest Zappa son, Dweezil on his solo albums and work released as the band, Z. - wikipedia

But among musicians, Keneally has worked with Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Wadada Leo Smith, Henry Kaiser, Andy (Dixie Dregs) West and Andy (XTC) Partridge. Listening to the largely “instrumental” tracks here, the Steve Vai-Joe Satriani touch is also evident.

But more importantly is Keneally’s attitude towards internet sharing.

Keneally not only offers free tracks on his site, he has prepared two EPs, each containing five tracks, that can be downloaded for free. And he has also been generous in offering the EPs as MP3s (256 kbps) and lossless flacs.

Keneally writes:

I encourage the spreading of this Free Live EP far and wide. Feel free to put it on as many music download sites as you want, torrent the living hell out of it, tweet, Facebook, Pinterest… the more you tell your friends, the more people will download it, and that helps me build my audience. Which in turn helps me to make more music and tour… maybe even tour to your town. (We’re trying to play everywhere we can.) All I ask is that the contents of this download (the music, art and liner notes) remain intact and unaltered and again, it remains FREE. So, please, share away! Thank you for giving this EP a listen - see you on the road!

Readers can download the music from Keneally’s website and, in this instance, a word of thanks to BillBunty for spreading the word and tracks.

Click on the highlighted tracks to download the MP3s (256 kbps). As far as we can ascertain, these tracks have never been officially released on CD.

  2. First couple tracks sound pretty good, definitely in the Zappa tradition…

  4. The world is populated by a lot of great musicians, but then there are those few who truly stand out. Mike Keneally is certainly among the stand-outs. Here’s a guy equally talented as a guitarist, keyboardist, singer, bassist….and frequently performs live doing three of these things at the same time! Rarified air indeed! Be careful though. Once exposed to Keneally’s lush and wide-ranging musical stylings it’s easy to get completely sucked in and forget about the outside world.

  5. Thanks so much to all contributors for spreading Mike’s music. Going to see him in Satch’s band on 9/1/13 in Scottsdale. This post makes the wait more enjoyable.

  6. Thanks for this!! I have his album, Nonkertompf….which is just very Keneally. There might be a couple of tracks with the Zappa Humor to it. Just a delightfully unique artist. I highly recomend.

  7. I live in New Zealand, and have only heard Mike play on FZ commercial releases, and luckily on concert recordings of FZ, Z plays Z, and on Ed Palermo Big Band. I’m really looking forward to getting these as soon as I’m home and can use my Pc.

  8. This is brilliant, and I’m not surprised. Saw him a few years ago in Providence, and he is a monster on the guitar and the keys. And a regular, affable guy, as he signed cd’s after the show. Zappa influence fer sure, but more edgy and original than some Zappa band survivors. Thanks Mike!
