LITTLE RICHARD R.I.P. 1932 - 2020

Little Richard, one of the pioneers of the first wave of rock’n’roll, has died on May 9, 2020. He was 87. Richard, whose real name was Richard Penniman, was born in Macon, Georgia in December 1932. He had been in poor health for several years, suffering hip problems, a stroke and a heart attack. Richard’s son, Danny Penniman, first confirmed the pioneer’s death. In a statement, Richard’s agent, Dick Alen, said: “Little Richard passed away this morning from bone cancer in Nashville. Richard’s career began when in the late 1940s but his early recordings with RCA Victor garnered little success. His breakthrough came when he signed to Specialty Records in 1955, releasing a run of wild and flamboyant singles – Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Rip It Up, The Girl Can’t Help It, Lucille, Keep A-Knockin’ and Good Golly, Miss Molly, among others – that made him a star on both sides of the Atlantic. His 1955 song Tutti Frutti, with the lyric ‘awopbopaloobop alopbamboom’, and a series of follow-up records helped establish the genre and influence a multitude of other musicians. -

Paris 1966 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the L’Olympia, Paris, France; November 1966. (This show has also been listed as Alhambra Theatre, Paris, France; September 24, 1966.) Very good soundboard (vinyl rip). Possible that the vinyl was sourced from a TV broadcast.

We considered ourselves not fans but connoisseurs. We could sit around and speculate endlessly on the reasons for Elvis’s artistic decline, Little Richard’s intellectual capabilities (he had entered Morehouse College, it said int he liner notes to his second album), Gene Vincent’s amputated leg or Carl Perkins’ speculated insanity…

In our hierarchy that made Elvis king, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis princes, and Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and Gene Vincent archdukes. And that was our high school yearbook.

With the Fats Domino band, I guess? Thanks a lot!!

  5. There’s no band credit, but Little Richard had his own band The Upsetters, whose members once included Billy Preston and Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix was fired in 1965, and Preston had released two solo albums by 1966 and appeared on the Shindig TV show, so it’s possible he wasn’t with Little Richard on this tour. I don’t hear any organ, but it could be buried in the mix. Lee Allen played sax on Richard’s early hits, but these solos sound very similar.

  6. Thanks Dingus

  7. Who knows, Kint, by 1966 maybe some of Fats’ band members did go on tour with other musicians. That’s a good link, thanks.

  19. Any chance of any Bad Company recordings featuring the (also) recently departed Brian Howe? The Mk2 version is criminally overlooked. I have a 1991 radio concert promoting Holy Water but nothing else.

  20. Did you hear about the dyslexic who walked into a bra?

By Derrick on May 11, 2020

  21. Person coughing at a birthday party in California. People then tested positive. . Black apes probably. They don’t believe in social distancing.

  23. I just saw that HHH and Nelson. These fucking black bastards need to be shipped back to Africa. Our forefathers should never of brought these monkeys here. These porch monkeys spit on whiteys food at all the fast food joints and the gooks scratch their asses and touch the food at the buffet places

By David Duke on May 11, 2020

  24. The new reality is we will all be wearing face masks. The niggers now can have a field day. Robbing whitey and no one will ID them cause they all look alike

  31. You can see this show on YouTube. The camera is mostly on Richard, but the band is visible. I don’t know what most of these guys looked like (except Billy Preston) and I haven’t gotten a good look at the band, so I am not sure who they are.
