BOB DYLAN
Royal Albert Hall 2013 (First Night) [no label, 2CD]

Live in London, UK; November 26, 2013. Very good to excellent audience recording.

Bob Dylan at the Royal Albert Hall. Now there’s a phrase with a history. His acoustic concert there in 1965 formed the centrepiece of the film Don’t Look Back. His gig there in 1966, with The Beatles in the audience, introduced the electric Dylan to London. A wrongly titled, very famous bootleg even claimed to have recorded that show, though the infamous cry of Judas betrayed that it was in fact the gig at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester.
- David Lister of The Independent

Bill Prince of GQ magazine wrote:

The band in particular seems to have mellowed (if that’s the right word) into a sublime force of lightly-wielded intensity: gone was the noodling that has accompanied much of Dylan’s foursquare, Muddy Waters-inspired blues numbers of late, and in its place came subtle shading (particularly in a beautiful coda to “A Simple Twist Of Fate”) and an attention-pique-ing refusal to let instruments take centre-stage (sadly, most of Sexton’s finger-picked soloing included).

The vibe was both meticulous and full-blooded, finally gaining in volume as the second set came to its close after a run of tunes from Dylan’s most recent album, Tempest, culminating in the new standard-bearer of Dylan’s ability to smelt copper-bottomed classics whatever his age - “Long And Wasted Years”. It earned a standing ovation - not bad for a song released in 2012 that has just taken the place of “Like A Rolling Stone” as a set-closer.

Dylan and his band returned for a short encore of “All Along The Watchtower” and the final track from “Tempest” a tribute to an old friend, “Roll On John”. With references to “Hamburg Streets” and its quote from the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life”, it’s not everyone’s idea of “vintage Dylan”. But this was surely the point. That man left the building long ago. The man standing in front of us, although well into his “late period”, has only, once again, got started.

Thanks to romeo for taping the show and to appleberry for sharing the tracks at Dime.

Thanks also to Paolo Brillo for the cover photo; and to serge for the artwork.

  5. So a court in France has agreed to indict Dylan for comments he made in the U.S. in the Rolling Stone magazine in 2012 concerning the Croatians and the Serbs. Viva la 1st Amendment and Free Speech rights in the U.S.A.!

  6. Thanks SO much Big O - just what I wanted.
Those of us following the Neverending Tour will appreciate what great form Bobby is on lately and collecting pretty much everything they can is a habit that can soon pale but these are a great addition to the vaults!
    Thanks guys!

As for the French situation, they have to act upon formal complaints but heck, he was right if you check out what he actually said. At least 20,000 dead in the Serbo-Croat ’situation’ in ‘91-’95. No-one’s expecting extradition of their most recently awarded member of the Légion d’Honneur earlier this year.
Who is gonna say he is wrong?

  8. Thanks so much for these. I was there, my tenth Dylan gig, and for me it was the best I’ve seen him. Great to get to hear the songs again. My highlights were She Belongs To Me, Love Sick and Long and Wasted Years. Thanks again.

  9. being right in what one has to say isnt always the point when it comes to a govt or the people in power trying to control what is said publically. they dont necessarily care how right or wrong what is being said is. they dont go by the truth to govern the rights of the people they rule over.
where here we should be saying ‘i may not agree with what u say but i shall defend to the death your right to say it’.. in countries like afghanistan and pakistan etc. its more like it doesnt matter if i agree with what u have to say and u dont have a right to say it.
since the infraction was made on usa soil where we have freedom of speech and we are way more powerful and hes a usa citizen and not a french one he has nothing to worry about. but i guess he wont be touring france any time soon unless he wants to address this situation. id hate to be france if bob has another album in him. lol.

  12. Bob Dylan and The Plugz, a Chicano punk band from LA, jammed together for a brief period after the Infidels album was released, and even played three songs on the David Letterman TV show.

Here’s a fine article by Lance Davis on Adios Lounge on their all-too brief collaboration, with videos from the Letterman appearance. All three songs were unrehearsed; Dylan called out the song titles and the music started. To my ears, it sounds like Dylan with a much less experienced, more punk-like Hawks backing him. In other words, pretty damned good! It’s a shame they didn’t do more, Bob’s obviously into it, I like his rock star moves.

  17. u idiots can reference all day long to what u think i said insisting that what i said was wrong and how u think i shouldnt have the right to think or say what i did. the fact is.. yes.. i have the right to my thoughts feelings and opinions.. even if u dont agree with them.. and yes u should fight to the death my right to express those thoughts and opinions. however once again.. and to this im not overly surprised as i wasnt a year ago when u didnt get it then either.. u still dont know what the hell i said then and u dont know what it is u are upset that u think i said now.
stop reacting in a knee jerk response to things that u dont have a clue about. u dont even know why youre upset or angry. and to keep bringing it up as if u are offended at something i said when u dont even have a fucking clue.. makes u look like an idiot.

By darth on Dec 6, 2013

  18. Shut the fuck up, darth.

By Innocent Bystander on Dec 6, 2013

  19. “u still dont know what the hell i said then”

i do. you said this: “a soldier saying that he was fighting for ‘our freedom’ doesnt mean it is accurate. theyre not known for their brains. they do what they do because of their fighting skills and because they are drones. its a numbers game.”

then it got much much worse. http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=1263

FROM THE DESK OF THE SARGE….

THIS TOPIC SEEMS TO BE A SORE SPOT WITH MR.CONGENIALITY. You don`t suppose he REGRETS making such ASSININE comments and realizes he was way out of line but HASN`T A CLUE how to apologize. I mean, someone FOUGHT FOR HIS FREEDOM and civil rights, whether or not he chooses to believe it.
I`d say, judging from the profane posts he SPEWS here regularly WITHOUT FEAR OF CENSORSHIP he owes a huge APOLOGY to SOLDIERS everywhere HOWEVER HE IS TO DUMB TO REALIZE IT !!!!!
personally , I`d turn him over to the ENEMY .
YOU can spin this any way you desire darth, twisting in the wind like an untethered TUMBLEWEED desparately grasping at anything and everything for safety but barth has printed the truth AND THE LINK TO THE LIES YOU SPOUTED LIKE THE TRAITORAND CHICKEN SHIT THAT YOU ARE.

By dropkick sarge on Dec 6, 2013

  22. like i said.. u dont even realize what i said or why u are upset with what i said. i am not sorry for what i said because i didnt say anything wrong. youre taking things i said out of context and not realizing that the intention of the person pushing his agenda forward had no intention of bringing it to the states. your idea that these soldiers were doing what they themselves thought was right and just is just plain ridiculous. and as i said all youre doing is trying to argue a case here with me simply because its me. u dont care if im right or wrong. u just wanna go against anything i say. even if u agreed with me u would pick the alternate side and try to be pc because u think its the popular side. im not like that. i think for myself and express my own thoughts feelings and opinions that dont reflect everyone around me just to be one of the herd. im sorry that u feel the need to be that way. im also sorry that u feel the need to attack others who dont agree with u rather than trying to see things their way. my point again is that my freedom as well as your own was never at stake. we arent fighting the revolution anymore here. thats 237 years ago and no one who fought that war is around any longer. no one who fought in any war since then even thru ww1 is around any longer.
when u quote me pay attn to the words u are quoting. look at what i said. i didnt say them for no reason whatsoever. i meant exactly what i said when i said them and every one of them had good reason behind them.
this topic isnt a sore spot with me. no. u have that wrong. its a sore spot with u idiots since youre the ones who have a problem with what i said. i dont have a problem with it. im perfectly fine with what i said. see?
and im not here to shut the fuck up. its never going to happen no matter how many times u say it. youre wasting your time.

  25. ……. this is a Bod Dylan thread right?

“How many times must the cannonball fly before they’re forever banned?”

“Come you masters of war that build all the guns … I just want you to know I can see through your masks.”

“You fasten the triggers for others to set fire Then you sit back and watch when the death count gets higher,”

“I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard It’s a hard, it’s a hard And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall,”

“In the nineteen-sixties came the Vietnam War Can somebody tell me what we’re fightin’ for? So many young men died So many mothers cried Now I ask the question Was God on our side?,”

  28. UNTIL YOU GET INVADED SWAPPERS , LIKE 9/11
THEN YOU AND DARTH CAN FEND FOR YOURSELVES

Fortunately I can fend for myself and certainly don’t need the likes of you ‘defending’ me. Especially from cretinous retards like this! THIS is your response from my DYLAN quotes? REALLY?
Can you really be that ignorant and ill informed?
Do you include Bobby in that too, Dropkick?

Is your ignorance of what is going on elsewhere the world really that parochial, reactionary, blinkered and ill informed?

BTW you weren’t ‘invaded’ twelve years ago, your country ( I assume you are American from the rhetoric) suffered a heinous and ghastly ‘attack’ of an insane magnitude around which there are still many unanswered questions that we are all very well aware of. Pity you are clearly not so well informed about the attacks on other countries other than your own. This from a country that has killed more of it’s own citizens than in the past world wars put together. Why we’ll be sending in the UN peacekeepers any day now!

Really not good on a Bob Dylan thread - he’s American right? So before you try to condemn me with your own tiny world view, that would be funny were it not so sad and ignorance fuelled, we are all OK to garner and enjoy different voices and opinions too yes?

Please try and pay greater attention at the back!
