BOB DYLAN
Royal Albert Hall 2013 (Third Night) [no label, 2CD]

Live in London, UK; November 28, 2013. Very good to excellent audience recording.

Brice posted the following at inbetweenthetracks.wordpress:

The band is tight and keeps it simple. Charlie Sexton on lead is particularly impressive. His intricate, swing-y guitar licks, although almost imperceptible at times, add something very unique to the sound. But the accent is on Dylan’s voice and, believe it or not, he actually sounds great. For the past ten years or so, his voice has veered toward a growl more than anything, but he was somehow surprisingly very intelligible last night. On ‘Forgetful Heart’, his voice even comes back to that nasal croon he had in the early ’90s.

One of the early surprising highlights of the performance is the heartfelt waltz that is ‘Waiting For You’, a sort of latter-day ‘To Ramona’. “Happiness is but a state of mind, anytime you want you can cross the state line”, he sings. ‘Pay In Blood’ is particularly thrilling too, with Dylan’s gravelly voice reinforcing the raw, fierce aspect of the song. The first set then ends with a stunning rendition of ‘Love Sick’, which just proves how great a performer Dylan is. The atmosphere is charged and dark, almost stifling in the way each word rings so powerfully.
