THE BLASTERS
Philadelphia 1986 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Chestnut Cabaret, Philadelphia, PA; July 19, 1986. Very good to excellent soundboard.

Singer Phil Alvin co-founded the Blasters in Los Angeles with his guitar-slinging kid brother, Dave in 1979; the blues-roots-rocking band ended its recording career in the mid-’80s and, shortly thereafter, except for the occasional reunion gig, folded its tent for a while. Before dedicating himself to academics (getting graduate degrees in esoteric math disciplines), Phil cut a delightful solo album, Un ‘Sung’ Stories (1986) of blues, gospel and jazz goodies, featuring Sun Ra and the Arkestra on three tracks.
- The Trouser Press Guide To ’90s Rock

Dave Alvin, the group’s primary songwriter, left the band in 1986 for a critically acclaimed solo career. He was initially replaced on guitar by Hollywood Fats (birth name: Michael L. Mann) who appeared with them at Farm Aid. Phil Alvin has led various incarnations of The Blasters intermittently since then, including a few reunion tours and live albums of the original lineup. Dave Alvin has occasionally performed with the band, and recently replaced his brother due to an illness. Personnel as of 2011 is Phil Alvin together with John Bazz, Keith Wyatt, and Bill Bateman. On July 3 of 2012, The Blasters returned with a new studio album, “Fun On Saturday Night”. The album includes a duet with Exene Cervenka of X and The Knitters.

  4. DAMN YOU Big-O!!! This ain’t the first time this has happened. How the hell did you know I had just pulled out “Hard Line” (their BEST album!) after not hearing it for years and been O.D.ing on it for the past week, pining like hell to hear some of that live (besides the great Farm Aid “Common Man”)?

I admit I’m not a big Blasters fan (except for H.L), but Phil Alvin’s little known solo album “Unsung Stories” is beyond fabulous. Highest recommendation.

Man, when the musical vibes are in the air, you really come through in spades.

  5. Dropkick, we may disagree on “other matters”, but I sure am with you on the: “FINALLY… etcetc”

  8. these guys kicked ass even without dave!

By barth on Dec 8, 2013

  9. Dropkick, yes I do have County Fair (well, a cassette dub to cd, anyways), I think even the legendary Top Jimmy has a cameo on it. Good call. But dude, while I generally agree your thoughts above, with all due respect, you really don’t need to YELL.

However, if it’s alcohol induced, all is forgiven. Been guilty of a little belgian brewed over-reaction meself once or twice (or three or five or ten or twenty)…

  13. Dropkick, yer darn tootin’ I got Top Jimmy, three of his CDs, plus assorted live stuff. “Pigus Drunkus Maximus” is a classic. Saw him with and without the Pigs several times in the LA area. One of the great musical losses to this city - and sadly, completely self-induced. There’s some youtube stuff. Carlos still makes the rounds….
I’ve got the Chuck E. Weiss album that Waits produced around here somewhere. Wonder whatever happened to him… ?

By lowendbill on Dec 8, 2013

  14. right again sarge, “pigus drunkus maximus” is one of the greatest slabs of bar band rock every waxed. i wish i could have seen them live. carlos guitarlos has two fine albums that are very worthy of your coinage.

chuck e. weiss is extremely cool, hes not riding tom waits coat tails. he once played a bum on “married with children”! heres the episode chuck appears at 6:50.

  17. Love these guys live in any configuration. Just saw their Christmas show with X in PHX. A total rocking blast. Catch ‘em both in Cali between now and the end of 2013. Going to see Dave Alvin, Johnny Bazz and Bill Bateman backing Gene Taylor at the legendary Rhythm Room in PHX on 12/29. I’m Shakin’ to that American Music, baby!

By Johnny Kinkdom on Dec 9, 2013

  18. PS: Fans should look for bootleg “Live 1986″ which includes one of Dave’s last regular gigs taped on Valentine’s Day in San Luis Obispo. There is also a soundboard from Trafalmador Cafe in Buffalo, NY dated 7-17-86 with this same band.

By Johnny Kinkdom on Dec 9, 2013

  19. PPS: A buddy of mine in San Diego just told me that the Blasters are playing at a club in LA on New Year’s Eve with the Gene Taylor Band. An original Blasters reunion is expected! Gotta go and set some year end travel plans!

By Johnny Kinkdom on Dec 9, 2013

  20. news year with the blasters..couldn`t be any more rockin..
one of my top ten concerts was for sure a dave alvin and the guilty women show .i couldn`t believe how good it was .
If i could have a concert wish it would be los lobos and the original fab t-birds and the blasters…

By dropkick sarge on Dec 9, 2013

  21. A great post BigO! Thanks for including these guys….they are all time greats. True rock and roll.

By JB on Dec 9, 2013

  22. sarge probably the best rock n roll show i ever saw was dave alvin with the skeletons as his band and also the opening act at jc dobbs in philly in 1991. i just got it from sugarmegs its listed as 1991-11-11. not much bass but a very good audience recording and its daves birthday. the taper didn’t catch the beer bottle being broken over some unlucky dudes head after the show as we were basking in the rock n roll euphoria. the bouncer didnt catch the offender who ran down south street where all the hippies meet. i saw the original fab t-birds once r.i.p. keith ferguson. los lobos are always great.

the skeletons who were previously the morells are also a fine band with a great sense of humour. the morells “shake and push” is one of my all time favorite albums. who else would write a song about their favorite hamburger joint and feature it on the cover? be aware that some of their songs might be considered as “novelty” but theyre some of the finest roots rock players out there.

By barth on Dec 9, 2013

  23. hey barth and lowendbill..you guys have dave alvin`s Pleasure Baron`s Live in Las Vegas with mojo nixon and country dick montana ?
    a beauty!

  26. erm, yeah nice one! just to say the comment at the top is NOT from me!

whoever is doing this, and I can guess who, please stop it, if only that its REALLY boring and Dropkick has been really getting awfully cross with me! - “waste of space” is not a phrase I would use about anyone and as I work with addicts, it is someone who knows me hence the reference to ’smack’ ha ha very good but it’s getting tiresome now

still I guess you are finding it really funny to set us up against each other . . . . . think I’m outta here . . . [wot, again Swappers?!] . . well for a bit
    Sorry Dropkick . . . not me!

  31. IN RESPONCE TO DROPKICK SARGE (FROM DEC 8, 2013) IT WAS A SAD DAY WHEN HOLLYWOOD FATS DIED. IT WAS A DUMB STUPID DAY TOO, HE DID IT TO HIMSELF. YEAH, DUMB. STILL, TODAY ALMOST ANY OF THE GREAT CURRENT BLUES - JUMP GUITARISTS CAN’T COMPARE TO FATS. NOT JR. WATSON - DUKE ROLLIBARD - KID ANDERSON - KID RAMOS - BOB DYLAN, ERIC CLAPTON OR PAUL MC CARTNEY WOULD HAVE DONE WELL TO HAVE A MUSICIAN OF HIS CALABIER. IT’S EASY TO BE A SMARTASS, I KNOW CUZ’ I’M ONE TOO. I SAW FATS MANY TIMES. I’VE BEEN PLAYING 54 YEARS NOW AND I’VE SEEN FIVE DECADES OF GREAT PLAYERS AND PLAYED WITH LOTS OF THEM. HOLLYWOOD FATS - WOW

  32. hello carlos guitarlos!
its good to hear from you sir! i have your first two fine fine super fine CDs, i had no idea you released three more until i found your web site. i’ve been a fan since the first top jimmy album, that’s another excellent stack o’ wax.

i hope you’re doing well and staying healthy. keep on rockin’!

By barth on Jul 24, 2014

  33. Carlos, another thanks for fighting the good fight and escaping the stupidity. We met back at Senor Fish in downtown some years ago. Great nights of music and smartassisms.

  34. r.i.p. lou whitney, bass player for the morells and the skeletons, two of my favorite bands. lou was well known as a producer and engineer. he ran a recording studio in springfield mo and also worked as a substitute teacher.

the musicians lou worked with included dave alvin, bo diddley, the bottle rockets, robbie fulks, jonathan richman, boxcar willie, and exene cervenka,

here’s lou starring in a jack daniels commercial-
