DION AND THE STREET LIGHT BAND
Asbury Park 1989 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the The Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ; August 26, 1989. Very good audience recording. The Ken G. Collection (Vol 60).

Thanks to the taper; and to kingrue (George) for sharing the tracks at Dime.

kingrue noted:

Here we have an extremely rare recording of Dion. Live from the legendary Stone Pony. Known for his Doo-Wop, pop oldies, rock and R&B styles. Backed by the Street Light Band, which includes the versatile guitar player Johnne Sambataro. This recording is complete and really good sound quality. I really enjoyed working on this recording and getting to hear something that I normally would never listen to. This is well worth having. You don’t find much around like this.

  2. One of the greatest male singers of all time, Dion is probably incapable of hitting a bad note. I saw him in a small club, maybe around this time, with a band of NYC players. My memory’s hazy, but I think it was Scott Kempner of the Dictators on guitar and the Smithereens bass player Mike Mesaros. They were supposed to be writing songs for an album and playing a few shows in the NYC area. The set list was almost devoid of Dion’s early hits, The Wanderer was one of the few they did, and that was the encore. An album never appeared. It was a real thrill to walk into the club and see Dion, one of the coolest guys ever, standing at the bar. Thanks, bigO.

Here’s on of my favorite later Dion songs about his personal redemption, Your Own Back Yard:

  3. The first song that ever had an effect on me as a youngster was “The Wanderer”. Never thought I would get to see him but I’ve been fortunate on three different occasions including the Dave Edmunds Rock-n-Roll tour. Getting this is great. Thanks again.

  5. One of my favorite 70’s albums was the reunion concert of Dion and the Belmonts. Thanks BigO! I believe BigO has a recording of a concert from the Dave Edmunds Rock n Roll tour.
