NEIL YOUNG & THE CHROME DREAMS BAND
Malahide Castle [No label, 2CD]
Live at Malahide Castle, Dublin, Ireland, UK, June 29, 2008. A Dutch Masters Audience recording.
How important is freedom of speech?
After taking his “Freedom of Speech” tour on the road in the U.S. with Crosby, Stills and Nash in 2006, his current European Summer Tour is laidback by comparison. That old tour is still “alive and well” and coming to your home theatre in a week or three as Deja Vu, the movie. We hear a soundtrack is also to follow.
That was their ’60s tour. CSNY were all aged above 60 and the songs represented the spirit of the Sixties - protest songs, civil rights, anti-war, public spiritedness, social awareness and active citizenship.
On this European Summer Tour, it’s all about dreams especially shiny, happy chrome dreams. Young ends every evening with a spirited rendition of that Beatles’ song A Day In The Life. If you get to see the Spanish broadcast DVD, you can see Young banging on his guitar a la Hendrix - above the head, behind the neck and thrashing about on stage. Not acting his age for sure.
He opens tonight’s almost all-electric show with a ear-splitting Love And Only Love to make the case for love as salve and salvation. The songs that follow match the opener’s ferocity with Mr Soul, Powderfinger and Hey Hey, My My. The last third of the show is reserved for some jamming. No Hidden Path is almost half an hour long while the rarely played Words stretches to 13 minutes.
There is no solo acoustic set or Young at his pump organ. There is a short set of ballads with fan favourites Oh Lonesome Me, The Needle And The Damage Done and Old Man.
This is not the Sixties anymore. Young people want to be entertained. Older fans want to reminisce about the “good old days”. Nostalgia is not the same as contemplation but sometimes you make the mistake.
While there’s a lot of rocking, there’s no preaching like on the Freedom Of Speech Tour. The fact is, Neil ends the night with John Lennon’s A Day In The Life. This is a song about contemplation. But it’s not HIS song. It’s not HIS tune. When you watch the Spanish broadcast, he’s angry.
“I read the news today oh boy…” So how important is freedom of speech?
With thanks to the Dutch Masters Collective. This show was taped and edited by Young Dutch Master. A fantastic audience stereo recording done right in front of the stage. Lineage: Edirol R-09 + Sound Professionals SP-CMC-8 microphones.

Still unreleased is the soundtrack of the new Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young documentary, Deja Vu, that premiered at Sundance in January 2008. It documents the group’s 2006 trek across America playing live Neil’s album Living With War. His anti-Bush songs [in particular Let’s Impeach The President] practically divided his fans between pro and anti-Bush supporters. So which side are you on? Buy the Living With War album here.

There’s no ‘resume suport’ for the first track, so, since I’m on dial-up, there’s little chance of downloading the file.
I guess I can wait until Friday and try to see if I can syphon grocery money toward premium access. If that would allow me to download the whole track, it’d be well worth missing a few meals for, I’d think.:)

Thanks. This is actually very nice sound. Turn it up and you feel like you’re right there. And a rather cool set list as well.

Hi,
As I am the person who recorded this show and uploaded on dime I want to have this taken of here. It’s a shame to make it available in a lousy format. And next time contact me first when you want to upload someone else’s work.

Interesting facts.I have bookmarked this site. stephanazs

Wow. I just read the taper’s comment. How said that someone who tapes shows wants to deny music to those who would love to hear it. I can understand the ‘ask first elitist mentality. That’s quite common and well within reason. And it’s nice he/she/it offered it on Dime but unless I’m mistaken, people for whom broadband is either unaffordable or (in my case) unavailable, are just lesser humans and are simply out of luck.
But, hey, he’s not the only one who thinks only those with money or who live somewhere where there are options other than dial-up matter. Hell, at one time only landowners could vote, asnd those of a darker skin colour - well, I’m sure there’s no need to go there.
She/he/it (Shit?) probably wishes Bush could get a third term so the rich can get more tax breaks and those without can get shit upon more.
Thank God for the kind-hearted folks behind this site who have ever so often proven that not everyone lives with an “I have, so I’m better than you” philosophy.
Thanks again, Big O people and lets hope that someone a bit less into class distinction taped the show and may make it available. And that maybe Shit’s broadband will be inexplicably terminated.

“And next time contact me first when you want to upload someone else’s work.”
Sheesh. Talk about irony. So what did Neil say when you asked him before uploading it in the first place?

Can we get the tracks back for download or order a CD? I saw Neil Young at The Hop Farm festival and I think this set is very close to what he played then. I would love to have something to listen to to remind me of the amazing time I had.
