Thanks to ricola for initially sharing the tracks at Dime; and to dublin for keeping the show alive.

This is a very special and rare [show] recorded behind the iron curtain in East Berlin. The Friedrichstadtpalast was a famous hall and mostly [featured] ballet and pop music… always selected by few communists.

  3. Something exhilarating whenever Ella works on a modern song (at least for 1966. She is clearly having fun. Download all with confidence!

  7. Thanks for this great recording.
Friedrichstadt-Palast (correct spelling) was a rotten pre-WW-2 hall next to Brecht’s “Theater am Schiffbauer Damm”. Both had been very popular venues at the Eastern edge of the Iron Curtain, especially for allied and diplomat personell and tourists who flocked in from West Berlin through Friedrichstr. Station.
The hall hosted a bunch of top artists (Louis Armstrong, Chris Barber, Juliette Greco, Gilbert Becaud, several times AFBF).
Some of them I had the chance to see as a student in East Berlin in 1965/6.

  10. First of all I’m so happy it is still up and available, saw it in my BigO email and was thoroughly fascinated considering the location and all plus hey… It’s Ella! what makes even better is being able to share this with my still hip 92 yo Mom who loves her as much as I do, the generation gap disappears, this from a lady who casually mentions a few years ago when i was really getting into the Ella and Louie recordings that she say Louie perform at small dinner club in Santa Monica when she was on collage break
