Listen Harder [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Opera House, Lawrence, KS; November 16, 1982. Very good soundboard.

Newer fans (and that’s a relative term given that R.E.M. were active for 31 years from 1980 to 2011) might look to Out Of Time (1991) as the defining moment when the group moved from cult to international status. Older fans would probably consider Chronic Town (1982) and Murmur (1983) when it all started.

Thanks to waterisnat for sharing the tracks at Dime.

waterisnat noted:

This is a fantastically clean and clear soundboard recording of a young R.E.M., right before they were going into the studio to lay down the tracks on “Murmur”. The audience was treated to seven of the tracks that would end up on the album, along with both sides of the first single, three tracks off “Chronic Town”, two songs that would end up on Reckoning (!) and one that was a perennial live favourite of the band but was still a few years away from its final studio version (yes, I know, that adds up to 15 tracks. You do the math!). What’s extra special about this recording is that the guitar and bass are mixed hard left, and all vocals and the drums hard right. That may not be ideal, but it’s very revealing when listening through headphones.

The six bonus tracks on the bootleg CD have been omitted because the 1983 gig at Larry’s Hideaway in Toronto is available (in part) on the Deluxe Edition of Murmur.

  4. rem is one of those bands that theres no lack of rare live material for. especially 1980-84. and then 89-92. after that i think i stopped paying much attention cuz it seemed like every note they either recorded or did live was available and less rare than their official output. kinda ironic.

  5. Listening to just the left channel here on purpose. Just the bass and guitar. I always love taking recordings apart.
