(Pre-Black Sabbath)
Silloth 1968 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Queen’s Hotel, Silloth, UK; July 13, 1968. Fair to good audience recording.

This one’s strictly for the fans - the sound is a bit rough.

Mythology were an English blues band based in Carlisle that formed in early 1967, out of The Square Chex. The band featured future Black Sabbath founding members Tony Iommi and Bill Ward. Mythology had some regional success but eventually disbanded after an incident where all four members were arrested and fined 15 pounds for possession of cannabis resin on May 27, 1968. Much of their gigging work dried up after this event, and they soon disbanded after the final show at the Queen’s Hotel, in Silloth on July 13, 1968. After the dissolution, Ward and Iommi, along with Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler, founded a new band, the Polka Tulk Blues Band, later called Earth and finally renamed Black Sabbath. - wikipedia

  2. Wow! Many thanks BigO! Another rarity to my Sabbath collection!

By Josef (Czech republic) on Jun 27, 2014

  3. I already have heard this before. But it’s a welcome addition to every Sabbath collection. This iss Pre-Sabbath, a band in the wake of british blues boomers like John Mayall or Ten Years After.

  4. Busted for cannabis resin?!
Good god, as if being out of weed and having only resin to smoke isn’t bad enough…

By Willis on Jun 28, 2014

  5. Big O, have you ever considered adding “thumb up” and “thumb down” buttons to the user comments? Because I would surely thumb up Willis’ comment above! Good one, brah!

By golgo hakase on Jul 2, 2014

  6. Golgo, agreed. Might be a good idea on at least a trial basis… mainly, in the hope of minimizing all the tiresome trash talk. As long as only one “thumb-button” per I.P address per posting were able to be regulated.

By tin ear frohman on Jul 3, 2014

  16. Certainly that is Tony Iommi on The Stones’ Rock & Roll Circus, but he’s merely ‘miming’. It’s actually Mick Abrahams (original Tull six-stringer)who’s playing. Just saying!

By Gregor on Jul 3, 2014

  17. my tin ear tells me that is iommi on stones circus.can i be wrong yet again?

By tin ear frohman on Jul 3, 2014

  19. Ooooh, gunna get some flack for dat I fink

By GMAL on Jul 3, 2014

  20. iommi was with tull for a number of weeks in late 68. whether he is miming has been disputed in various places. he did perform various shows with tull at that time. i think the length of time was 3-6 weeks altho it could have been 8 weeks depending on which source u read. i think i have one or two recordings with him in the line up but god knows where they are. i may have not kept them if they werent up to my standards. i dont remember. this item here on this page is still difficult for me to decide if i want to keep it since its one of those one of a kinds.

and thanks gmal haha. funny man.

  21. Hey Darth!

I heard/watched a fairly recent interview with Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) on Youtube (i think), where he was asked about the Tony Iommi episode.

He replied that Tony didn’t in fact ‘play’ with the band at all. Tony & he spent an afternoon or evening jamming together to see whether it could work. It didn’t. But Iommi was asked whether he could stand in on a TV show (’Rock & Roll Circus’), as they still didn’t have a replacement for Mick Abrahams. He kindly obliged but was miming (the reason he was wearing his hat so low).

I’m not making it up, nor am i a troll. These words are straight from the Flautist’s mouth & he explains in much the same words in this interview too:

    Peace & good vibes!!!

By Gregor on Jul 3, 2014

  22. I meant to add: this is not another ‘Darth Bashing’ exercise, just supplying the correct info from Ian Anderson’s own recollections.

By Gregor on Jul 3, 2014

  23. I really don’t care what this darth fella is all about. Maybe he’s a split personality (Glen Frohman vs. Darth Vader). Maybe he’s absolutely nuts. Maybe a godlike genius. Who knows the truth behind the mystery? Maybe he doesn’t know it himself.

By Tony on Jul 3, 2014

  24. The plot thickens… Anderson says that Iommi’s guitar wasn’t plugged in, but if you look closely at this video from the 0:16 to 0:20 mark, there’s a cord plugged into Iommi’s Strat. It’s possible it wasn’t plugged into his amp.

BTW Tony- darth is no godlike genius.

  32. You guys should get together with Darth over a nice plate of hot sausages and see if you can’t talk out your differences and become friends again… as the late, great, Rodney King once said “can’t we all just get along?”
