INDEPENDENCE DAY

July 16, 2008 – 5:08 am

Not quite an epic performance to match the day it celebrates, this is so far the only FM stereo broadcast of a show from the Magic Tour.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND
Independence Day: A Sirius Broadcast from Goteborg 2008 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Ullevi Stadium, Goteborg, Sweden, July 4, 2008. A Sirius radio broadcast in stereo.

Death and taxes are life’s only certainty. So is a Magic show.

The Magic Tour is akin to a “last ride” with fan favourites thrown up and played like in the “good old days” of ‘75 to ‘78. No rearrangement of songs into folk or country versions like on previous tours. Those shows had Springsteen play a wide range of his Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger influences.

But Magic shows are the tried and tested with Sandy, Born In The U.S.A., Out In The Streets, Two Hearts, Prove It All Night, Darlington County, Badlands and all the stronger tracks from his last couple of albums including Mary’s Place, The Rising and This Hard Land. We get Roy Bittan’s piano trills, the Mighty Max’s solid rhythms and the Big Man coming in at all the right places. The familiar.

Magic may also be Bruce Springsteen’s most inappropriate album title as well. It arrived at a time when a recession or depression may well be underway. All the news today hardly brings a cheer to the blue-collar, working class that make up the core of his fans. But hope is eternal.

What’s also missing are those public service announcements from the tour that supported John Kerry for President. This tour coincides with yet another U.S. presidential election but Springsteen seems to be shying away from commenting although he has tentatively endorsed the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama.

We seem to be entering a phase where apathy reigns and even as the mighty strip away your rights, citizens don’t seem to think they can make a difference any more. Magic is pure entertainment and the way this Sirius Radio show is compiled, only the hits are offered. We’re dancing in the dark.

This is a Sirius Radio capture of the July 4, Ullevi Stadium broadcast. Sirius broadcast this live on their Sirius Radio in the U.S. and included five songs from the main set and five of the six encore songs. Dave Marsh was the DJ. Sirius uses compression and the stereo image is very narrow, almost mono. Thanks to born2run63 for sharing. Thanks also to MikeNess for the artwork.

This act of sharing, a crime in some accountant’s book, may be our last defiant act.

  3. Thanks again, as usual I’m glad to be able to listen to this concert, for which I thank you.

And I also am anxious to learn about your reasons for that comment, “This act of sharing, a crime in some accountant’s book, may be our last defiant act.”

    Thanks, Tom

  4. Thank you for sharing selected bits and pieces of the recent Springsteen show. It’s still not the entire performance, however. Perhaps a better sounding and complete audience recording will surface? If this is the broadcast quality of Sirus, I’ll pass on their service.

  6. The book “For You” anthologizes hundreds of fans stories… it forms a genuinely interesting social history, even for those with only a passing interest in Springsteen. Adorned throughout by a luscious range of colour and black and white photos… this is a treat for the eyes and the heart, really capturing the sense of a global fan community.
