KATE BUSH
Before the Dawn
London 2014 [no label, 3CD]
Live at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, London, UK; August 26, 2014. Very good audience recording.
Kate Bush live… it’s been 35 years. Altogether, Kate Bush will be performing 22 shows at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith from August 26 to October 1.
NME: 35 Years Was Well Worth The Wait
“Where’ve you been?” Kate Bush asks nonchalantly, beaming widely as the second standing ovation of the night greets the close of her first song, ‘Lily’. Thirty-five long years in the waiting and, at first, incredible as it was to even believe it was happening, it seemed as if Kate Bush’s legendary reluctance to tour had made for a somewhat more restrained show than the all-singing, all-dancing, all-acting extravaganza that was 1979’s The Tour of Life. Bush found that experience so exhausting that she more than once had to be carried offstage. [Click here for more]
The Guardian: A Magical New Dawn
Kate Bush, you notice, is barefoot. It is rather wonderful that she has taken her shoes off and thrown them in the lake for us, as per the lyrics of The Hounds of Love. Bush performs the song flawlessly and with obvious pleasure, just a few minutes into the second night of her 22-date comeback run. At 56, she could easily have matured into some theatrical grand dame shod in high heels and accessorised with self-satisfaction. She could have returned to the cultural fray for an almighty ego-rub. As it is, there are signs of luvviness… but you are never in any doubt that she remains a questing artist, fabulously unconventional in her concerns. [Click here for more]
Independent: Just What Everyone Was Hoping For
The PA plays soothing Eberhard Weber, an indication of Kate Bush’s current musical inclinations, but there’s no way it can soothe the hubbub of anticipation amongst the audience, many of whom have been waiting 35 years for this. Then the disembodied voice of “Lily” heralds Kate’s long overdue arrival again onstage, strolling at the head of a small group of backing singers that includes her son Bertie. Barefoot and black-clad in three-quarter length coat and long fringed fabrics, she’s like a gorgeous Gothic temptress, the former mime and dance moves reduced to a stroll and waft of material, with an occasional twirl. BBC: Greeted With Huge Cheers
Kate Bush has made her stage comeback to an ecstatic response from fans at her first live concert for 35 years. Bush received a standing ovation as she closed the show with Cloudbusting, from her 1985 hit album The Hounds of Love. The 56-year-old British star was appearing at London’s Hammersmith Apollo - the scene of her last live show in 1979. Tuesday’s three-hour set kicked off a run of 22 shows, titled Before the Dawn, which sold out in minutes. Afterwards, she thanked fans for their “warm and positive response”… There was a huge roar from the crowd as Bush appeared on stage - barefoot and dressed in black - leading her five backing singers. excellent sound… there’s some excited hootin’ and hollerin’ in places, at first, but when the crowd is quiet, this could be mistaken for a soundboard… the quality is THAT good… and the performance is awesome, too. nice post, BigO.

Many thanks from those of us not lucky enough to be there!
By ictus75 on Sep 6, 2014
This entire performance is exceptionally good, and, as noted, captured quite nicely as well.
By Mr. Jimmy on Sep 6, 2014
The track listing appears to be incorrect- Cloudbusting does not seem to be actually Cloudbusting. One of my favorite of Kate’s songs.
By Paul on Sep 6, 2014
Many Thanks. But no Wuthering Heights. Maybe she’ll add it in future shows. Can only hope.
By DA Kosak on Sep 6, 2014
“this could be mistaken for a soundboard”…really? you must be used to listening to some shite soundboards.
Pardon me if I don’t get caught up in the monumentous wave of enthusiasm…plus she sounds as flat as a witch’s tit.

By dropkick sarge on Sep 6, 2014

the emperor’s new clothes…..because KB is trying to pull a fast one on you. mate.
But you’re too smart….she’ll NEVER fool you with her flat voice and out of tune bullshit!
By mothy on Sep 6, 2014
Thanks a million - my mate was at it and she hasn’t come down yet!

if shes doing 22 shows perhaps at one or two of them gilmour or gabriel or some other huge name of noteworth acclaim will join her on stage and make it all worthwhile. im sure she will film / record some of the performances and make them available so there can be some income ultimately. cant help wondering how shes managed in 35 yrs without performing.
By darth on Sep 7, 2014
cant help wondering how shes managed in 35 yrs without performing.
she wonders how you have managed the same without working.
By miss manners on Sep 7, 2014
why would she wonder about me? she doesnt know me. im not in the public eye and im not an entertainer. u dont know me or anything about me or if i work or have worked or when. u arent aware of my income or how i manage etc.
cant u find something else to do?
By darth on Sep 7, 2014
The sound and performance of the second nights recording is a better to my ears. Welcome back Kate.

No Babooshka,This Womens Work,Experiment IV?
By Marc Hopwood on Sep 11, 2014
Just a note - the tracklisting on the back of the artwork is correct. The Encore of “Among Angels” and “Cloudbusting” is an actual encore and actually the last two tracks of Disc Three. The tracklisting should read:
209: The Morning Fog
210 should actually be 301: Prelude
211 should actually be 302: Prologue
301 should be 303: An Architect’s Dream…etc, etc with 311 being Among Angels, and 312 being Cloudbusting
it is GREAT to hear Kate in a show that I doubt I will see live. She sounds good for her age, and it is a good, well put together show.
By Keith on Sep 13, 2014
Interesting all those grumpy remarks, must be quite stupid people. They don’t have to download it, and even if they did they did not have to listen to it. Why still bothering with sour remarks?
Go, play with yourself, much more fun (as long as I don’t have to witness it, at least).
Meanwhile let the rest of us enjoy what WE like.
Thank you.
But actually many, many more thanks tot BigO.
By Sjef on Sep 13, 2014
Thanks Keith for the feedback.
By bigozine2 on Sep 13, 2014
Can anyone CONFIRM the date this was recorded? It is an identical recording to the download link graciously offered up by by ND which states “In Flac 27/8/2014″ which was not opening night. So, I am wondering which site has it right?
And, as always, thank you BIgO!
By CrimsonCrow on Sep 14, 2014
@CrimsonCrow: This is definitely the recording from the opening night. Check carefully the recordings from links given by ND, they are obviously different from this. There’s another link on guitars101.com which contains exactly this recording. There are also recordings from other days, eg. 12 Sep and 16 Sep. Just browse the “lossless audio bootlegs” section on the site.

This is great,! Interestingly I worried about the quality of her voice being able to hold up to many live shows. But having attended late in the game, Sept 26, I can say in comparison to this recording, her voice actually improved becoming stronger and apparently she became more comfortable and confident as the shows progressed.
Thanks again for this!
