SPIRIT
West Berlin 1981 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Waldbuhne, West Berlin, Germany; May 17, 1981. Very good FM broadcast.

Though they did have one single, I Got A Line On You, Spirit were known primarily for their albums: an ambitious, eclectic blend of hard rock, blues, country folk and prefusion jazz. - Rolling Stone

Together with his stepfather, Ed Cassidy, songwriter/front-man Jay Ferguson, bassist Mark Andes (with whom California and Cassidy initially had formed a band called the Red Roosters) and keyboardist John Locke, Randy California founded the band Spirit in 1967. The stage name “Randy California” was given to him by Jimi Hendrix to distinguish him from another Randy in the band (who Hendrix dubbed “Randy Texas”). California drowned in the Pacific Ocean in 1997 at the age of 45 while rescuing his 12-year-old son Quinn. - wikipedia

  3. Lover of ‘I gotta line on you’ and ‘Fresh Garbage’ when they came out over here (not least on ‘The Rock Machine Turns You On’ a legendary compilation that introduced many of us Brits to the best of American psychedelia) you can imagine my surprise when Spirit turned up in the town centre here to play the local basement of a small pub called the Pennyfarthing in the mid Eighties. Unconvinced it could my Sixties heroes we went anyway to be most pleasantly surprised to find Randy and Ed still very much alive and kicking!
    Thanks for this Big O
    It’s appreciated

  5. 7 yrs after this show they played the bottom line in nyc and the show didnt sell out. randy welcomed a few interested fans backstage to sign some autographs and pose for pics with them. in fact before the show he even hung around at the bar talking to the crowd and telling jokes with some eager listeners. that may have been his last nyc appearance altho he died 9 yrs later.

  7. Spirit where one of the best and coolest psychedelic rock bands ever. I love the vibe and groove of their songs. They got pretty popular here in Germany through their performance in the famous Rockpalast TV show in 1978. It was a brilliant show and is released on CD and DVD which I strongly recommend, you also can check it out on youtube. Randy California and Ed Cassidy where two of the coolest and best musicians of their era and I´m pretty sure they would have released more great music if not that tragic accident would have happened to Randy. Spirit will always be one of my favourite bands and their shows are always welcomed here on BigO.

  8. “one single”?…. Mechanical World (way different mix in mono) Dark Eyed Woman, 1984, Nature’s Way, Mr. Skin were all played in Louisville,Kentucky a lot. AM radio, too. Interesting I Got A Line On You was not….

  9. Big O Amigos, thank you very much for the Spirit, it is always welcome. Yes, I sort of agree with Mr. Harper, I thought their only/best-selling single was “Nature’s Way.”

In deepest Mid-Mo, we only heard them from an occasional bit of Beaker Street and T. Beamer’s record collection.

Truly an awesome band, Mr. California was an unsung guitar hero.

    Thank you and be well.

    http://www.spitting-lizard.de/wald1981.html
They played together with Mitch Ryder and Mickey Jupp, nice little festival. 17 D-Mark for the ticket equals today about 8 Euros or 11 US-Dollar…..
