Get Yer Leeds Lungs Out [Mighty Diamonds MD 2004, 1CD]

Live at the University Of Leeds, Leeds, UK; March 13, 1971. Very good BBC radio.

Here is another version of a popular show.

Thanks to godxofxrock9 for sharing the tracks at Dime.

Swingin’ Pig used a reel-to-reel copy of the original BBC archive tape for their releases of this show (Get Your Leeds Lungs Out and Get Your Leeds Lungs Out Revisited [click here]). What’s on these releases is all there is in the BBC vaults. There’s no more material and, in particular, no stereo mix in the BBC vaults - otherwise TSP would have put it out. The mono mix of the material we know is all he Stones gave the BBC for the broadcast…

Of course, they did not open the show with Dead Flowers but it was the Stones’ decision to have Dead Flowers at the start of the broadcast tape, for whatever reasons that only the Stones or people from the Stones’ camp could explain. I would think that the missing songs had technicals flaws which could not be repaired - could be anything, microphone misfunctions resulting in missing lead vocals, guitars or any other instruments, distortion or whatever. Or performing flaws, fuckups - whatever. It’s also possible that there were tight time restrictions and therefore some songs had to go, and the Stones decided to drop the opening songs. Nowadays, in case of shortened/incomplete broadcasts of Stones shows, the songs that get dropped are usually from the middle of a show, leaving the opening and finale of the shows intact. However, starting a Stones concert broadcast with a country tune like Dead Flowers seems a rather bizarre decision but it has a certain charm. I can imagine that it sounded “fresh” at the time in contrast to Jumping Jack Flash which already was featured on the GYYYO album as the opener.

There is another version of this show - sourced from “soundboard analog reel to reel” - that is being shared. However, this soundboard master version cannot be shared lossy. Those interested can torrent the lossless flacs here.

This is what uploader Spider_Web wrote of the soundboard master version:

Although not an uncommon show, it is taken from the master reel to reel with verified lineage, not from a bootleg or radio broadcast. As the text file says, no equalization or sound manipulation has been done to this recording - the original recorded sound is what you get. I’m sure a ton of folks already have this show in some form or another; hopefully this will be some sort of upgrade.

Some of you may ask if there is any difference in sound between this and the version that was pressed on numerous bootleg records and CDs. The answer is not really. Most of the vinyl bootlegs were taken from this same source, and most of the CD bootlegs were taken from this exact transfer somewhere down the CDR chain. I also believe that many of the CD bootlegs underwent a bit of equalization and/or level normalization. Again, this copy is raw with verified lineage.

I knew someone back in the mid 1990s who had access to the master reel to reel recording. The reel was carefully recorded directly to stand-alone CDR, and then a copy was made for me. Supposably this same reel to reel was transferred to analog cassette in the 1970s, and transferred to DAT in the early 1990s. I do have a DAT clone of the transfer done in the early ’90s; the sound is about the same but a tad duller.

  6. Hey swappers and tony: you may not like darth, but give the guy a break. He’s providing information to us music-loving fans - what the hell is so wrong about that? And Tony, how is that the LEAST bit disrespectful of the Stones????? (ps. swappers, by your own definition [a person who sows discord on the Internet] it seems to me that describes you perfectly]. Now, on to the REAL business: great Stones at their prime - thanks BigO!

  11. Thanks GM not gonna lose any sleep even if the darthman does have apologists, they’re only allowed out on day release and they do get to play with the wax crayons so they’re welcome to their misguided opinions and if they behave nicely and don’t swear like the foul mouthed troll hisself they get a balloon on a stick

By swappers on Jan 30, 2015

  12. A successful troll is one who becomes a center of attention and tends to be the topic of conversation instead of the purpose of the message boards. In this thread, for example, fully 7 of the 10 (and now, unfortunately 8 of 11) posts concern said troll in one way or another.

This does not mean a successful troll is in any way admirable.

It does, however, mean there are people on the message board with very, very thin skin.

A successful message board is one that contains members sensible enough not to let the troll(s) succeed.

Too bad your troll isn’t at least funny or amusing.

  13. wow..they talk about me even when im not even there. all i did was post a death notice on the most recent item on here so ppl would see it. rod doesnt have a page or id post it there. i felt that it was ok to post a small notice of his passing here. it shouldnt bother anyone so much that they get their panties in a bunch but alas it did. and look at how many comments after the fact are about me. such anger and hatred and animosity for what??
and as i have said many many times.. i dont use other names on this site or any other site. i am never a hider and i never try to trick people into thinking i am someone other than who i am. i use one id and only one id.
i am not asking for any breaks nor am i expecting someone who is using an alternative name from one he is known under to give me one. i dont care what your opinion is of me. if u dont like what i say here… dont read it. plain n simple.
i am not looking for ppl to agree with me.. in fact i prefer that people dont. if everyone did.. how boring would that be? but if u dont.. have a valid reason for not. grow the fuck up people.

  18. BAAAAAAAAD Darth! Now you’ve so distressed swappers (again), that he may never recover from the trauma. To save him the future agony, please consider the suggested revision to your original post: “What a nice day it is to listen to “Leeds Lungs..”, but what a sad day it is that Rod McKuen kicked the bucket. O well, we can still play “Dead Flowers” to console ourselves.”
