Melbourne 2009 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Palace Theatre, Melbourne, Australia, January 7, 2009. Very good FM broadcast.

Imagine, if you will, a darker version of Bruce Springsteen circa Darkness At The Edge Of Town. To liven things up, maybe Jim Morrison without the excesses. Given Nick Cave’s interest in Americana, that might not be off the mark.

Playing in front of a home crowd in Melbourne, Cave does a blistering set though the complete show was not broadcast. But it’s more than enough to put you right in the thick of the performance as Cave performs songs from his latest album, 2008’s Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, as well as songs from his past.

Here is how Australian newspaper, The Age, reviewed the first of the two Melbourne 2009 shows (January 6): “(Cave) and the Bad Seeds veered between jocular and earnest. Occasionally, at their best, they came across as dirty old men with filthy grins who should know better. Which was probably the idea… The show is a slick, professional production. Endowed with a vast catalogue to choose from, the bludgeoning title track from their last album came quickly ahead of a slew of classic Bad Seeds tracks.”

This Melbourne show was one of the last gigs that long-time Cave collaborator Mick Harvey played with the group. On January 29, 2009, Harvey left the Bad Seeds after 25 years citing professional and personal reasons.

  6. I’ve been waiting a long time for a Nick Cave concert @ BigO. I hope there’s more to come.
Cave is maybe the only one who is equal to Bob Dylan and his live concerts are sensational.

  7. Mr.Cave is now at the height of his creative powers. No one can touch him lyrically in the world of poprock rockpop or whatever else it’s called these days. If you could sneak a Grinderman show up on BigO at some point I would be most obliged. Ta xxx

  8. Has anyone seen the photo exhibition at Obscura Gallery in East St Kilda? One photographer took photos of Nick Cave at his 2007 Melbourne concert - it is some wonderful work!
