NEIL YOUNG
Secret Gig - San Luis 2015 [no label, 2CD]
Live at the SLO Brewing Company, San Luis Obispo, CA; April 16, 2015. Fairly good audience recording.

Todd and Korie Newman of Good Medicine Presents dropped a super secret show on SLO Town last night - Thursday, April 16 - when they welcomed Neil Young to SLO Brew. Young, backed by Willie Nelson’s son Lukas Nelson and his band Promise of the Real, delivered two sets of environmentally focused and socially conscious rock to a sellout crowd that quickly lined up around the block as news of the last-minute concert spread by word of mouth. Those who couldn’t get in gathered in the alleyway to listen to Young through the side door, and what they heard was Young rail against his pet causes, from corporations to GMO manufacturers. Monsanto basically got punched in the face by Young’s songs.
What’s amazing is no one seemed to know about the concert until the very last minute. “Until this afternoon, we weren’t sure if Lukas was bringing his dad Willie or Neil Young,” Good Medicine Presents’ Korie Newman said. “Lukas was going to make the show free but decided at the last minute we should charge something.” Tickets for the lucky 350 or so fans who got in cost just $10 at the door.
Young wore his trademark fedora and delivered incredible guitar work and his signature vocal sound. Fans packed around the stage, and even trying to get through to the bathrooms proved a struggle, but the crowd was friendly and frankly blown away at what they were witnessing. Lukas Nelson and his band were tapped to work with Young on his new album and tour, and their recent touring has honed them into a tight band.

Thanks to Whiskeyrecordings who recorded the show; and to kingrue for sharing the tracks at The Traders’ Den.
kingrue noted:
Neil performed many new songs, giving the crowd a taste of what’s to come. Basically testing out material for the new album and tour that will be coming later this year. For the first set, the Zoom recorder malfunctioned and only recorded onto the left channel. I copied the left channel into the right channel. Tracks 1 - 6 are now 2 channel mono. The remainder of the recording is 2 channel stereo.
Neil starts set 2 with ‘Walk On’, but it wasn’t recorded. This starts abruptly into ‘Monsanto Years’. A big thanks goes to the taper who had just enough time and was close enough to rush over and buy a ticket and record it. Sending his recording over my way for editing and uploading. This is the first and maybe only source for this secret gig.
Thanks also to ethiessen1 for the artwork.

since it was recorded and aired it would be nice if lukas’ set from farm aid last year could find its way here. i havent seen this offered anywhere. and all the other performances where neil joined in with the other musicians from that event. we got neils set as i recall the day after it happened from the webcast. some of the other sets that day would be wonderful to have. especially all those where neil got on stage. and as i say lukas’ set. please. if not then perhaps another sbd or fm??
