NICOLETTE LARSON
Strawberry Music Festival 1986 [no label, 1CD]
Live at Yosemite, CA, August 29, 1986. Very good FM broadcast.
Nicolette Larson had such a big hit with Neil Young’s Lotta Love in 1987 that it cast a large shadow over everything else she did. Music listeners also probably remember her backing Neil Young on Comes A Time and Harvest Moon. Even as she’s in her country mode, you’d half expect her to break into Lotta Love. As she said (before If I Didn’t Love You): “I have a new album called Rose Of My Heart. I hate to plug it but nobody else will…”
Larson’s career was unfortunately cut short when she died in 1997 as a result of complications arising from cerebral edema. She did not leave behind a large body of work but with her friendly manner and chatty personality, she probably won new fans with this performance at the Strawberry Festival.
Her choice of songs was quite impeccable - from Neil Young (Comes A Time) to Burt Bacharach (Mexican Divorce) to John Hiatt, Jesse Winchester and Rodney Crowell - Larson gave the songs just enough tenderness to sound heartfelt but not too much to make them maudlin. Perfect for an idle afternoon.

Ah, Nicolette, we hardly knew ye…
She had the chops and all the stuff to stay right up there with Emmylou, Rondstat, Bonnie Raitt…damned shame she died so young.
This is a fine ROIO from Nicolette. Download it and save it.
