EDDIE VAN HALEN R.I.P. 1955 - 2020

Eddie Van Halen, guitarist in Van Halen, has died after battling throat cancer. The 65-year-old passed away October 6 according to his son Wolfgang. In a statement, Wolfgang, who plays bass in the band, wrote on Twitter: “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

Van Halen was formed in 1972 with Eddie, his brother drummer Alex Van Halen, Mark Stone and David Lee Roth. Van Halen’s mother was born in Rangkasbitung, Java, in Indonesia. The single “Jump” became the band’s first and only No. 1 pop hit in 1984. An outpouring of grief swept the metal and hard rock world with bands from Metallica to Black Sabbath sending their condolences.

VAN HALEN
Auburn, WA 2015 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the White River Amphitheatre, Auburn, WA; July 5, 2015 (opening night). Very good audience recording.

seattlemusicnews.com:

The fans came out in droves for opening night of Van Halen’s summer tour, breath baited, mullets in tow. A mostly older crowd – with a few youthful stragglers – were treated to a monster set list featuring many classic songs not often heard from the band. Breaking the set open with “Light Up the Sky” the Van Halen family – Eddie, his brother Alex, and his son Wolfgang, along with lead singer David Lee Roth – brought out all the stops. The instrumentals were on point once the band got into the groove, but given it was the first night of tour that’s no surprise.

Roth on the other hand came out of the gate as over-the-top as ever. While his vocals are certainly showing his age, his spinning, matador-like scarf waving, and mic stand tricks came off as quirky and youthful. A few timing hiccups and Roth’s various chattering didn’t slow down the band, or the fans. The crowd sang along with abandon, fists pumping, camera phones in the air.

zososhane69 noted:

Holy shit is all I can say. Ed has never sounded better AND ‘In a Simple Rhyme’ ‘Dirty Movies’ and ‘Drop Dead Legs’ live??!! I’ve seen VH 10 times and this was the best time I’ve ever seen them. Thank god for Wolf and pushing a phenominal set list! The Roth spot before Ice Cream Man is extremely boring and I can only hope the guys catch a breather during this.

Thanks also to eruption1962 for the artwork.

  4. Come on people, let’s be honest here. It sounds like Roth has just finished gargling broken glass. The rest of the band sound competent, but uninspired. Like the Stones, Yes, and so many other “classic” bands, it’s all about filling those coffers. Nothing wrong with that, but it is generally prudent to at least act like playing to Pittburgh or Milwaukee is a highlight of the band’s life. It’s called show biz.

  12. That comment was not me . Another name hijackin asshole , but I agree It fuckin sucks that all these musicians and athletes from our youth keep droppin like flys . Wasn’t a big Van Halen fan , back then. But Eddie kept the rock spirit alive in the 80s when rockn roll started changin and dying . Bonham died and Zep broke up . Ozzy left Sabbath, Keith Moon died and The Who wasn’t the same band afterwards

By Derrick on Oct 7, 2020

  13. Every fuckin decade since the 70s has gotten worse and worse for rock music. Hated them big hair bands in the 80s like Motley Crue , scorpions , Def Leppard . REM was talented I guess , but to me they was a bunch of college band whipper snappers . Never cared for Springsteen either . The only thing good bout the 80s and 90s was Tom petty and his band . Zep was gone , The Who was by then a fuckin joke . After 2000 much everything sucks . Just a bunch of rap shit and little teen twats shakin their asses , lipsinkin to piped in music . Shit don’t even know if bands play their own music no more

By Derrick on Oct 7, 2020

  14. DD , I can’t even name a great rock lead guitarist in his 20s and 30s today . Kids today don’t seem to love rock music like we did . When I was a kid everybody wanted to be either Jimmy Page or Bart Starr / Johnny Unitas / Mickey Mantle in sports . Shit I don’t know what kids are into today . They just sit in front of their laptops wit earplugs and iPhones.

  15. Derrick, Eddie Van Halen , Bob Gibson , Tom Seaver and Lou Brock have all left this earth , yet Orange face Donald Trump is still here . That shows how unfair life is .

By Derrick on Oct 8, 2020

  29. R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen . Another great one gone . We are slowly but surely losing them all . I doubt anyone today will be as respected as these greats we’ve lost the last few years .. still in pain over Tom Petty .

  30. Back around the end of High School we used to see Van Halen play at backyard parties around Pasadena. Later I saw them open for UFO at the Golden West Ballroom in 1976. Some years later I was working in the mountains at a YMCA camp and the lifeguard showed up with their first album. Then around 1990 I worked with a girl who showed me photos of her and Eddie whom she used to date. RIP Eddie. He kept R & R going while the music industry began to decline.

  47. Roth sounds awful,i had to check the notes to see if it was Him. I am a massive fan of the first album,then,i.m.o. it went downhill and i gave up on them Years ago. Jump made me decide that they had nothing more to offer me. Little Dreamer,Ain`t Talkin` `bout Love and Feel Your Love, still hit me in the same spot all these Years on. Bands can get away with dodgy vocals,in a live capacity, but recordings are a different fettle of kish.

  48. For Fucks Sake. I can`t believe this site is still flooded with, painfully unfunny Dick Jokes. Give it a Fucking rest will ya. I expected highbrow, informative, intelligent comments on a site like this. It celebrates the Love of Music, and anoraks like myself, have devoured the great uploads over the years. I don`t believe any subject matter is above finding the funny side, but i grew out of this sort of shit when i was a very young lad,as most people i converse with have. and it isn`t worthy of this site. Up your game,or piss off to a site where i don`t have to read your dross. I Love reading others opinions about the Music i am passionate about, but the comments worth reading are being swamped by dross,by people of,it seems, very little intelligence and even less wit.
