LESTER BOWIE’S BRASS FANTASY
Frankfurt 1999 [no label, 1CD]

Deutschen Jazz Festival, hr-Sendesaal, Frankfurt, Germany; October 22, 1999. Excellent webcast.

I Only Have Eyes for You (1985) is the third album by Lester Bowie recorded for ECM and the debut album of his “Brass Fantasy” group.

ecmreviews.com:

This debut album from Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy is still the outfit’s best. The moment those doo-wop horns saunter in for the title cut, you know you’ve come home. Bowie not only enthralls us with his fortitude, but manages to do so while keeping alive in his muted cone the dying flame of a bygone era… Bowie’s Brass Fantasy is one of the more compelling jazz configurations of the 1980s…

  2. Unexpected and nice surprise - I don’t know much about Lester except that a friend played some for me years ago, which sounded great and I never properly followed up on. Till now. Which is to say, that’s this site at it’s best.
