The Alternate Shaved Fish [Pear PDP 037, 1CD]

Studio Outtakes, Rehearsals, Demos, Live. Very good soundboard.

It was 35 years ago… Around 10:50 pm on December 8, 1980, as John Lennon and Yoko Ono returned to their New York apartment in the Dakota, Mark David Chapman shot Lennon in the back four times at the entrance to the building. Lennon was taken to the emergency room of nearby Roosevelt Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival at 11 pm.

  3. I’m not a big fan of the alternate-take versions of all-time classic albums, with an insane number of floor-sweepings versions of songs. I know there are any number of folks who just have to have it all when it comes to these great old albums. But that said, I gotta tell ya…you put these alternate Shaved Fish numbers in their proper order, and it’s like hearing this amazing LP all over again for the first time! Well done, and many thanks!

  4. Thanks BigO please post some more Alternate Lennon !

  5. Now THIS is cool. I remember buying this album in 1975 as a teenager - an eclectic compilation album now with a cool alternate presentation. I seem to remember they put this album out as a contractual obligation - like they needed one more album or something like that, and John went into house husband mode. I could be wrong. Anyway, thanks again Big O!

  6. I recently got the official “Shaved Fish” and I was shocked that Lennon had edited half of the tracks: “Give Peace a Chance” is just a one minute excerpt; “Mother” is a half minute shorter than the album track; “Woman Is the N—-r of the World” is over a half minute shorter; “Whatever Gets You Through the Night” fades before Bobby Keys’ saxophone solo; and “Happy Xmas, War Is Over” cross fades into an unrecognizable live take of “Give Peace a Chance”. Unnecessary self mutilation.

  7. For Buster: yeah I agree. I’ve always hated it when songs get chopped, usually to fit into some bullshit single format. It makes me think that, again, even though it’s a great collection, it’s kind of haphazard.

  8. Alternate - Occur in turn repeatedly (ABABABABABA…..)
Alternative - Available as another possibility or choice

  9. And what if we got an alternate alternative ?

By Dick HEAD on Dec 11, 2016

  10. Track 11 is great without the strings and chorus, except one good thing about the chorus was it partly covered up Yoko’s warbly, off-key annoying voice. Wish someone would do an edit mix to totally de-Yoko the track.

By Head Master on Dec 11, 2016

  11. Yokko voice bad ,had so many many dicks down her slut throat and all she could do was scream and sing off key She even such monkey dicks

By Goober on Dec 12, 2016

  12. Goober you have it wrong, it was Yoko that was forced down OUR throats if we wanted to listen to John for the last 12 years of his life - and after his death. I worked in a used record store in the 1970’s and early 1980’s and the wear on Lennon’s vinyl album tracks was consistent on all the used copies - tracks of her screeching had been skipped over and were near mint, but the ones without her crap were well worn from repeated listening.
It was the same thing with one whole side of the “Concert for Bangladesh” LP, no one listened to the Ravi Shankar side and it was always in pristine condition while the other sides had lots of wear. As much as I liked the Beatles, they all repeatedly pushed someone at us we didn’t want to hear.
Producers and sound engineers can do anything and going a step further, it would be great to have someone de-Yoko the entire John Lennon collection on a series of bootlegs, not just Happy Xmas.

By Head Master on Dec 13, 2016

  13. Ya know, at one point I would have agreed with all these Yoko haters (and Goober seems appropriately named) but John wanted her there, wanted her on the recordings, and I’ve come to the conclusion that if I respect him (and I do) then I should respect his artistic choices.

Also, Kiss Kiss Kiss is a fab track of 80s dance pop, showing off the debt owed by many groups (such as the B-52s) to Yoko.
