Los Angeles 1984 [A Panda Production, 1CD]

Acoustic set. Live at McCabe’s, Los Angeles, CA; May 18, 1984. Very good soundboard. Slight hiss.

There was a time when “The Smiths were a more popular indie band than The Long Ryders in Europe and when only The Replacements were a more popular indie band in the USA.” So goes the blurb for The Long Ryders’ first full-length album, Native Sons (1984). And that was before the release of State Of Our Union in 1985, the group’s most well known and highest charting album.

Thanks to lilpanda for sharing the show at Dime.

lilpanda noted:

This might be my favorite Ryders show. Half covers, half originals. Now you see their influences clearly and man, they were all over. This show was copied for me by a record reviewer I used to know, and he got his from Sid. The tape had absolutely no top end, just sounded muffled. So years ago, I added top end, which brought out some hiss, but so what. This sounds much better. At this early juncture, oddball covers were common and here you get a real taste of what they could do off the cuff.
