BOB DYLAN
Osaka 1978 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Matsushita Denki Taiikukan, Osaka, Japan; February 24, 1978. Very good audience recording. 2016 complete ‘mix and fix’ version by audiowhore.

Finally… a complete Osaka February 24, 1978 show. The official live LP, At Budokan (February 28 and March 1, 1978), would be recorded soon after this show and it captured Dylan during his “Vegas” period which was divisive, which actually describes Dylan’s entire career.

Thanks to audiowhore for the efforts and for sharing the show at Dime.

audiowhore noted:

This is a ‘new’ version of this show that uses LB-12066 to patch the three brief missing sections from LB-4133. The recordings have also been mixed to hopefully improve their sound. The result is a complete version of this very nice show from Osaka.

LB-4133 is a very good quality recording. Thanks to the taper for doing such a great job. This same recording has also been torrented as LB-4143, LB-7293 and LB-11745. This is easy to confirm due to three brief missing sections in the recording, most likely due to tape (or reel) flips made by the taper.

These occur as follows:
1. between Maggie’s Farm and Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright
2. between Blowin’ In The Wind and Just Like A Woman
3. between The Man in Me and Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.

These cuts resulted in a brief section of Bob talk missing after Maggie’s Farm and the first few lines of Just Like A Woman also being lost.

I have given LB-4133 some gentle EQ to hopefully improve its already very good sound and then used hard limit between tracks to smooth any excessive audience applause.

LB-12066 is an alternate recording of this show from LK’s tape collection. Thanks to LK for sharing this rarity! While the recording quality of LB-12066 is noticeably poorer than that of LB-4133, it does include each of the three sections missing from LB-4133. A simple patch of these sections was not possible though due to LB-12066 running slower and being a lower pitch than LB-4133. So I sped up LB-12066 by 3.08% so as to match LB-4133, and then increased the pitch by 3% in order to match that too. The speed and pitch matched LB-12066 was then given an EQ mix and hard limiting to improve the sound as much as possible. However, it remains of noticeably poorer sound quality.

The following missing sections were then patched into LB-4133.

Maggies Farm > Don’t Think Twice = 24 seconds patched in
Blowin’ In The Wind > Just Like A Woman = 41 seconds patched in
The Man in Me > Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door = 16 seconds patched in

  2. Thanks Big O - thought I had most if not all the gigs just prior and post Budokan but this is a rare treat and the work done is most welcome. Thank you!

  3. I ditto swappers’ comment. The performance all-around has a tremendous vitality, matched with a mind blowing recording for an audience source. Now no jarring gaps to dismay or distract the mind-and-ears enjoyment. Thank yous to the original tapers and everyone involved in bringing this scrumptious delight to me. Bon appetit!

  7. Does this show really include To Ramona?
not mentioned on any setlist i have seen.

Annecy55, the previous show in Tokyo 2.23.78 has To Ramona on it also.

  8. ScarRad is correct if you check the website set lists I think you’ll find ‘ To Ramona’ featured heavily around the February Japanese dates of ‘78 and may have been dropped around the 24th but was back in again later. Certainly featured several nights in a row around then.
