Salt Lake City 2016 [no label, 2CD]

Live at The Depot, Salt Lake City, UT; April 2, 2016. Very good to excellent audience recording.

In October 2015, American harpist, keyboardist, vocalist, lyricist and actress Joanna Newsom released her fourth solo album, Divers.

Thanks to docrupard for sharing the show at Dime.

docrupard noted:

Somewhat unusual setlist for a Joanna Newsom show, “crowdsourced” as she puts it, with a rare appearance of “The Things I Say”, as well as a requested “Go Long” and a requested-but-eventually-nixed “Sawdust and Diamonds” because by the end of the show, Jo had lost her voice. Show notable for a broken string during “Go Long” which led to an impromptu Q&A session after Jo figured out that she did not have that specific replacement string available and would have to fashion one out of a different string. In the midst of this, she called for a “Bulgarian Something Or Other” from Ryan Francesconi to entertain the crowd, and was pretty blunt with a few audience members who asked about her personal life. The harmonies with Robin Pecknold on the last few songs (especially “Time, As A Symptom”) are really beautiful.

The recording is a solid “A”: all instruments are present and accounted for in the mix, and Joanna’s voice is immediate and up-front.

TASCAM DR-40 internal mics > Adobe Audition (fixed string pop on “Go Long” and feedback on “Have One”, some multi band compression, fades, mild EQ to bump bass) > CDWAV [track splits and compression to FLAC 8]

  5. Excellent recording, brilliant show, thanks so much to the taper !!!
Joanna Newsom - she is standing on the shoulders of female giants like Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush or Tori Amos. Enough said…if you don´t know her, try this recording…

  6. Great quirky performance. Joanna is always interesting, but I like how her voice has matured since 2005. BigO has always served as a great sampler platter (record joke?) of what to buy for me. Thanks as always for the great music, BigO!!
