RITA LEE R.I.P. 1947 - 2023

Rita Lee, the legendary Brazilian musician, composer and founder of the trailblazing band Os Mutantes, has died on May 8 at 75, prompting emotional tributes to Brazil’s undisputed “Queen of Rock”. Lee was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021, memorably nicknaming her tumour “Jair” - a sardonic reference to Brazil’s widely loathed then president, Jair Bolsonaro. The pioneering artist and feminist icon, who sold more than 55 million records during a six-decade career, went into remission last year but died at her home in São Paulo on Monday night.

“At this moment of profound sadness, the family thanks everyone for their affection and love,” read a message on Lee’s Instagram account, inviting fans to a public wake at the city’s Parque Ibirapuera, one of Latin America’s largest parks. News of Rita Lee’s death sparked an outpouring of emotion and reverence towards one of the most important figures in contemporary Brazilian music.

“I’m a wreck. The Greatest has left us… There will never be another Rita Lee,” tweeted the Brazilian rock singer Pitty. Brazil’s culture minister, the singer and composer Margareth Menezes, hailed her as a “revolutionary woman”. “The world has lost one of the most unique and incredible people who ever existed,” one of her sons, João Lee, wrote on social media. “What an intense and spectacular life you had. Admired and loved by so many people. So ahead of your time.”

“Comadre Rita, Anibal, cabrinha, caprichosa capricorniana, amiga,” tweeted Gilberto Gil. “Rest, my sister. I love you.” Os Mutantes member Baptista credits Lee for the “circus feel” of the band, including its humor, costumes and instruments played, like the theremin. Even the current president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, declared three days of mourning and called Lee “one of the greatest and most brilliant names in Brazilian music.” “The angels sing,” Dias shared in a statement. “The archangels lower their eyes and God bows to let her go by… my love… she went to meet love.”

OS MUTANTES
Seattle 2009/Brazil 1970 [no label, 1CD]

Bumbershoot Festival, Bumbershoot Music Lounge, Seattle, WA; September 5, 2009. Very good KEXP FM. Rehearsals at Rua Venancio Ayres 408, Sao Paulo, Brazil; 1970. Fairly good soundboard (?).

Os Mutantes (”The Mutants”) are an influential Brazilian psychedelic rock band that were linked with the Tropicália movement of the late 1960s. After a hiatus from the late 1970s to the early 2000s, the band reunited in 2006, touring and recording new material. - wikipedia

Influenced by Hélio Oiticica’s art installation of the same name, Tropicália drew from the cultural concept of antropofagia, or the cultural and musical cannibalism of all societies. Hence Tropicalia fused rock with Brazilian and African rhythms. It also drew from poetry and theatre.
