JACKSON BROWNE AND DAVID LINDLEY
Complete Live at the Main Point 1975 - The Definitive Version [no label, 3CD]
Live at The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, September 7, 1975. Very good radio broadcast.
It’s good to know that singer songwriter Jackson Browne never lost his sense of humour. Thirty years after this classic 1975 concert, Browne could cheekily introduce Take It Easy (on Solo Acoustic, Vol 1) in 2005 that the Spanish version had a lyric that went: “I’m looking for a lover who’s not religious, not dangerous and who will eat me like a lobster in pink sauce.”
In fact, the most memorable part of this 1975 three-hour-long gig is when Browne forgets the lyric to Late For the Sky. He stumbles, then apologises to the crowd before asking them to remind him of the words before laughing at himself good-humouredly.
It’s odd that instead of being a dud track, this is the track you keep returning to. The reason is simple. Late For the Sky came out in 1974 and quickly became the favourite of all Browne albums despite it not having any Hot 100 single. The title track also features one of the most beautiful guitar solos in rock history with David Lindley, who’s also here on this gig.
Of course, this was also some years after, when Browne successfully hassled David Geffen to give Warren Zevon a record deal on the Asylum label. So he generously covers Zevon with Mohammad’s Radio, Hasten Down the Wind and Werewolves of London and plugs him by spelling the name and exhorting the audience to remember it. Browne also generously gives Lindley a solo spot and the latter is equally funny and lives up to Browne’s humorous tales.
This was one of a six-night benefit concert that was broadcast with many bootleg versions. But here’s the deal. This gig has been lovingly edited with the sound drop-outs fixed, songs organized in performance chronology and intros indexed separately from the songs.
Hearing Browne tell tales of Lowell George, Glenn Frey and Warren Zevon, at the peak of his young world-weary voice is too good to miss. Hear it before the deluge. - Philip Cheah
Thanks to rarediscs who packaged the tracks and shared it on the Dime site. Rarediscs noted: “This concert has always frustrated me since most of the versions that have been traded/seeded have numerous problems–poor sound, bad editing, speed/pitch problems, songs out of order/missing songs, etc. Hopefully this will finally correct these issues once and for all.”

Dear Big O - We used to drive cross town to the Main Pointe to see the ’stars of the future’ (who knew?) and I certainly remember these shows by Jackson Browne. Thanks you for unearthing this hidden gem which takes me way way way back to the days of my youth.

I have this concert on cassette tape. Talk about the memories. Thanks to WMMR in Philly for making this possible, as well as many other classic concerts from the 1970s (Springsteen, Todd Rundgren, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Colin Young, and way too many others to mention). Not only WMMR, but also stations from the west coast (KSAN) to the east coast USA, this is what radio was all about.
