Justin Townes Earle, an acclaimed US songwriter and son of Steve Earle, has died on August 20, in news confirmed on the artist’s Facebook page on Sunday night (August 23). “It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin,” the post read. “So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys. You will be missed dearly.”

Named for his father’s friend and idol Townes Van Zandt, Earle, 38, battled addiction throughout his life. He released eight albums across the course of his career, which saw him honored twice at the Americana Music awards including for his best-known song, Harlem River Blues. Earle left behind his wife and young daughter. No cause of death was confirmed. - theguardian.com

Ann Arbor 2009 [no label, 1CD]

Live at The Ark, Ann Arbor, MI; June 14, 2009. Very good soundboard.

American singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle is the son of alternative country artist Steve Earle and is named after Townes Van Zandt. Following the success of his critically-acclaimed-fifth-studio-album, Single Mothers, Justin released the companion album, Absent Fathers, in 2015. Absent Fathers was recorded alongside Single Mothers as a double album, but as Justin began to sequence it, he felt each half needed to make its own statement and they took on their own identities.

Combined with Absent Fathers, the double album perfectly showcases exactly why Justin is considered a forefather of Contemporary Americana. Hailed as an album that’s “showing the world that alt-country can be pretty dope,” (Noisey/Vice), Single Mothers has had great radio success, peaking at #2 on Americana radio charts at #18 at Non-Comm.

  6. It’s very sad to lose someone so young and talented . The kid obviously had demons . From what I understand he was raised by his mom , Steve was seldom there early on . I’m sure he saw his fathers own battles with alcohol and substance abuse growing up as well . Sad . Music today generally sucks , so when someone like this passes it especially stings , similar to Jason Molina another throwback to a better music era .

  7. Dope is probably the cause of death .

  8. Thanks Big O - always enjoyed his dad’s stuff but Justin Townes never seemed to travel or make it across the pond. So this a timely reminder
Sad loss and gone too young. Struggled with substance abuse like his name’s sake and his Dad
    So exactly what Dropkick and Bill said . . . . . .

Eli, Freddie Fender, CJ, Groupie Chick Traci, Derrick, U L E, Terrence, Bill, Smashmouth - You’ve really gone rabid repeating and talking to yourself. When you are treated like an adult, you ask for supervision/moderation! The word is self-restraint. Isn’t it obvious why you are not at other sites? They’ve have long banned you.
