BARRY GUY & RAI BIG BAND
with Kenny Wheeler, Paul Rutherford, Evan Parker
Roma 1980 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Roma, Italy; April 14, 1980. Very good FM broadcast.

Barry John Guy is a British composer and double bass player. His range of interests encompasses early music, contemporary composition, jazz and improvisation, and he has worked with a wide variety of orchestras in the UK and Europe. In the early 1970s, he was a member of the influential free improvisation group Iskra 1903 with Derek Bailey and trombonist Paul Rutherford (a project revived in the late 1970s, with violinist Philipp Wachsmann replacing Bailey). He also formed a long-standing partnership with saxophonist Evan Parker, which led to a trio with drummer Paul Lytton which became one of the best-known and most widely travelled free-improvising groups of the 1980s and 1990s. He was briefly a member of the Michael Nyman Band in the 1980s, performing on the soundtrack of The Draughtsman’s Contract. - wikipedia

survivor69 noted:

One of the few shows organized by the Italian RAI during 1980, I had doubts on how to credit this set, from an idea of Pasquale Santoli to unite some famed soloists with RAI Big Band, this is an English quintet lead by Barry Guy with Kenny Wheeler playing some of their compositions of the time arranged for jazz orchestra. This rebroadcast features only an edited part of a larger set and, according to radio announcements, both Guy and Rutherford named “Conversations” one of their played composition (it’s the same title, but they are allegedely two different tracks).
