BOB DYLAN
Music From Renaldo And Clara [no label, 1CD]

Stereo film soundtrack.

Bob Dylan’s 1978 movie, Renaldo And Clara, certainly has a checkered history and, unlike many other movies, there doesn’t seem to be many fans clamouring for a high quality re-release of the movie, which originally ran for 232 minutes (close to four hours). However, Dylan has also allowed in 1978 a two-hour edit of the film to be distributed.

Loosely based on the life and times of Bob Dylan (up till 1978), copies of the film, usually taped from TV, circulate among fans and collectors and, according to the wikipedia, the movie was generally poorly reviewed, often scathingly received, and its initial theatrical run was short. At the moment, the only parts of the movie to be released for consumers are the excerpts found on the “bonus” DVD accompanying the initial release of Dylan’s The Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Bob Dylan Live 1975, The Rolling Thunder Revue. Footage from the film also appeared in the music video of Dylan’s 1991 song, Series of Dreams.

But it is the music, filmed during Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1975, that lives on. Of the wealth of music featured, only a four-song promo EP was released in January 1978:
- People Get Ready (available in the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection)
- It Ain’t Me Babe (available on 2nd European Dignity CD single #165, Mr D’s Collection #3, and Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances)
- Never Let Me Go (available on Mr D’s Collection #3, and the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection)
- Isis (B-side of Jokerman single, 1984, also released on Biograph, 1985)

In the meantime, fans have tried their hands compiling music from this movie. Les Kokay has put out a two-CD set that is said to have better sound than the ones currently circulating:
- Renaldo & Clara (Norriaa) - single CD, very poor quality, misses out some important tracks.
- Renaldo & Clara (Reference Recording) - 2CD, sourced from a video of the TV broadcast, so mono and also poor quality; a good selection of tracks.

And now, here’s a new transfer, by JTT, sourced from the stereo film. This is what JTT noted: “It would have been possible to insert some tracks in better quality but I prefer to keep a consistancy throughout the disc.”

Thanks to JTT for making the effort and to eddiethecat for sharing the tracks on the internet.

Note: Click on the highlighted tracks to download the MP3s (these are high quality MP3s - sample rate of 192 kbps). As far as we can ascertain, these tracks have never been officially released on CD.

  2. I wouldn’t mind a re-release. I’ve seen it only one time in TV, probably in the 80’s.

  6. Just for the record, there are lots of Dylan fans clamouring for a DVD release of this movie (preferably on Criterion). Alas, it won’t happen in Sara Dylan’s lifetime.
