CHUCK BERRY R.I.P. 1926 - 2017

Lee Ballinger, Rock & Rap Confidential:

“Up in the morning and off to school!”

Chuck Berry died today. I first heard him just before I entered puberty. I liked the music but something about it scared me, pushed me into a dark unknown. I tried to stop listening to it but I couldn’t. Within a year or so, I was fully in the thrall of puberty and Chuck’s music made perfect sense, heightened every experience I had or wished I was having. Those guitar lines, those knowing grown-up vocals, were burned upon my soul, where they still remain for instant access.

I highly recommend Chuck Berry’s autobiography, told in the unique voice of a man who, without necessarily intending to, helped to integrate the country while living through the horrors of segregation. This is part of the legacy left by one of the greatest, most influential artists who will ever live.

I wrote this in December 2016:

I was on a Navy ship in South-east Asia during the Vietnam War. After a tour of duty of several months was over, we headed for home. I went through this three different times. As we would set sail towards California, much of the crew would stay up all night on the helicopter deck, frantically tuning their radios, trying to be the first person to get an American radio station playing some tunes. We were beyond tired, but we were alive and we were going home. Nothing else mattered.

The last time I experienced this ritual, I “won.” I got clear channel KOMA/Oklahoma City to come in, blasting through my radio 11,000 miles away from the station. The first song played was, I kid you not, Chuck Berry’s “Back in the USA.”

Chuck Berry turned NINETY in October. He’s got a new album coming out, as he sits on the throne of popular music knowing he’s given millions of us memories we will never forget.

Chuck Berry, who with his indelible guitar licks, brash self-confidence and memorable songs about cars, girls and wild dance parties did as much as anyone to define rock ’n’ roll’s potential and attitude in its early years, died on March 18, 2017. He was 90. The St Charles County Police Department in Missouri confirmed his death on its Facebook page. The department said it responded to a medical emergency at a home and Berry was declared dead after lifesaving measures were unsuccessful.

While Elvis Presley was rock’s first pop star and teenage heartthrob, Berry was its master theorist and conceptual genius, the songwriter who understood what the kids wanted before they knew themselves. With songs like “Johnny B Goode” and “Roll Over Beethoven,” he gave his listeners more than they knew they were getting from jukebox entertainment. His guitar lines wired the lean twang of country and the bite of the blues into phrases with both a streamlined trajectory and a long memory. And tucked into the lighthearted, telegraphic narratives that he sang with such clear enunciation was a sly defiance, upending convention to claim the pleasures of the moment.

In “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “You Can’t Catch Me” and other songs, Berry invented rock as a music of teenage wishes fulfilled and good times (even with cops in pursuit). In “Promised Land,” “Too Much Monkey Business” and “Brown Eyed Handsome Man,” he celebrated and satirized America’s opportunities and class tensions. His rock ’n’ roll was a music of joyful lusts, laughed-off tensions and gleefully shattered icons. - Jon Pareles, The New York Times

  3. One of the ALL-TIME GREATS…

By TDC on Mar 19, 2017

  4. Even genius has to give way to mortality, eventually, sadly.

He was as old as my parents, so I grew up with his music, and his songs - performed by so many people.

He gave us much to enjoy and left some sweet memories.

Thanks for this sample of his work.

By the real Tony on Mar 19, 2017

  5. Thanks Big O a fitting and suitable tribute concert set. Great quality recording and fun session.
Always worth reading the entries over at the re-post too guys in case you missed it. Although this is the superior recording IMHO
Greatly missed the legendary Maestro with NO equal. Name me another signature guitarist with such a title list, who has written as many classic rock standards! The Killer maybe, Little Richard? Then we descend to Carl P, Bit H, Elvis the crooner wrote jack . . . . . . (now you know this will start an argument!) Hah!
90 is a good innings by anyone’s standards and especially if you have been as naughty!
    Rock on, Johnny B Goode

  6. oops meant to read ‘Bill H’ as in Bill Hailey who merely held on to the coat tails . . . . . . .

By swappers on Mar 19, 2017

  7. Somehow, I got to meet and talk at least 15 minutes by myself with a handful of famous rock stars: Barry McGuire (3 times), Jan (of Jan and Dean), Andre Crouch (of Andre Crouch and the Disciples), and Dick Dale (the King of the Surf Guitar). But I really enjoyed talking with Chuck Berry. It was just him and I. I’ve already talked about that before on Big O. But all of them were generous with their time, treated me excellent. Dick Dale is quite ill with cancer (3rd time) at 78, Jan and Andre are gone. Barry is still active. Despite his messed up life, one thing we know, Chuck sure liked to perform on stage, kind of like Sammy Davis Jr. in that way.

By ScarRad on Mar 19, 2017

  8. he was an influence on everyone in rock ‘n roll who followed him. a great musician and songwriter. RIP.

By barth on Mar 19, 2017

  9. Another legend gone in the last horrible 14 month period starting with David Bowie. As John Lennon said to Chuck in 1972 while co hosting the Mike Douglas show,He invented rock and roll,John and Chuck then did a blistering Johnny B Goode. Chuck lived life on his own terms, unapologetic and uncompromising ,sassy to the end.A great documentary is hail hail rock and roll 1988 featuring Keith Richards who also produced it.Watching Keith argue with Chuck about how to perform a song is funny as hell.RIP Chuck

    By COREY M on Mar 19, 2017

  10. Careful Swappers, Bill Haley was no “coat-tail” holder. He was playing Rock & Roll on the New Jersey shore 2 years before Chuck went to Chicago. Having said that, RIP Chuck. Saw Chuck in a park in Cranford NJ a few years back and he didn’t disappoint. And thanks Muddy Waters for pointing Chuck towards Chess. I know Clapton will be playing some Chuck at Madison Square Garden tonight that wasn’t supposed to be in the set list.

By Rich on Mar 19, 2017

  11. Chuck was not only a lengendarry singer and musician, he was also a legendary cocksman , huge in other words Long thick and hard , we should know giggle

  12. Sad but true…another hero is gone.
Hail hail Rock and Roll! One of the best shows i´ve ever seen.

By Rafael Pérez on Mar 19, 2017

  13. The greatest songwriter in rock history and as good a wordsmith as Shakespeare was within that genre. Rock and roll is not the force it once was on radio and in the concerts, but somewhere in the words of Bob Seger: “all of Chuck’s children are out there playing his licks.” And that will not change.

By Tony on Mar 19, 2017

  14. The greatest songwriter in rock history

No no no no, trust my words: the greatest was Bob Dylan !

  18. RIP Mr. Chuck Berry. A sad loss for the music world. Nobody did more for Rock’s birth and his legacy continues today. So many bands today still close their encore’s with a Chuck song. Thanks for the great music!

By Bubbles on Mar 20, 2017

  19. How did my name get involved in this ? I never said Chuck Berry was a great songwriter. Great performer though . Can’t you trolls even give it a rest when someone dies ? Disgusting

By George Taylor on Mar 20, 2017

  20. Honestly…I resist all the stoopid stuff. But anybody who fails to see that Chuck Berry Is one of the foremost 20th century (and beyond) music composers - simply doesn’t know or Listen to music…PS Bebe Buell doesn’t hold a Candle to Barbi Benton…or Suzi Athena Simpson…

You deserve so much better than this Chuck, this is supposed to be a music appreciation site and if you don`t get the respect you deserve here then I really feel for the rest of mankind because society seems to have devolved into nothing senseless profane twits slobbering over their childish social media posts.

A little respect you idiot! Trust me, most of us wish you’d just go the hell away. Seriously BigO….can’t you block this cunt? The greatest dies & you turn it into this? I am done with this loser.
Oh wait for it…….peanut sized nuts on my chin, I know, I know. Genius material.

By Starrwatts on Mar 21, 2017

  36. Chuck Berry got more bush than Jagger , Plant , Bowie and Steven Tyler combined , I’m sure his giant dick helped in that regard , The only rock star that may have gotten more pussy is Gene Simmons, Gene has a 13 inch dick and a 14 inch tongue

    By Tony C on Mar 21, 2017

  37. Sluggo I sympathize with you and the dwindling sane people here , I’ve pleaded for sanity to no avail and even suggested shutting down the comments or at least make clicking on a link part of the process, no dice there either I’ve heard people refer to DARTH being the worst thing this sites ever seen He was before my time here but it can’t have been this bad ,went thru the archives for older posts just to see how people acted here in the past and there seemed to be more respect , no profanity or insults at least at this level , Now you have more trolls as well as copycat trolls to where you don’t know who’s who anymore. I guess you have to ask yourself do you come here for the comments or the music ? The music is great so try to ignore the idiots

  43. When Big O put out the Surfing 4CD Box Set, so many former band members would send in comments and talk about what it was like to be in those bands. How many band members comment now, since this garbage started? That’s right, NO ONE.

  44. Ooooooh burn, cretinous troll . . . . I can revise whatsoever I wish. You still haven’t attempted to answer EITHER of my questions about Chuck Berry numbnuts

Do you come here for music or to bloviate in the comments section , I suppose everyone has a choice, you ignore this bullshit and just listen and download music but apparently reading this shit and commenting is an addiction which is why people me included continue to post comments, agree if they weren’t directly to the right and below every music post it would be easier to ignore them , The click a link thing makes sense

  51. ScarRad and Swappers: I think its a disgrace, all of this, yet nothing will change it: commenting, or not commenting.
The music that this site has to offer is fantastic, and I have never seen comments like this any where else.
Next thing I am probably going to have nuts bouncing on my chin too: I mean, what do we do, give them a score of 1/10 for originality? They must have said this hundreds of times by now, and they have the audacity to say we are morons?
I think the only place that their nuts have been bouncing, is in their mother’s mouth.

  74. For the moron, I actually pity you with your undersize nuts (having seen them bouncing at close range now, I can testify they’re not much past pre pubescent). You have to sit at your device all day, waiting for something new to react to. It is you that is reacting, because you are so sad. Shame too, as you clearly have some talent for wit, if used in another, more fruitful context.
As for me, yes I am responding to you this time, because I want to tell you exactly how I feel. That’s not because I’m a slave to your posts. It is quite the reverse. I want to piss you off now, as I’ve had enough of these destructive posts, shitting on someone else’s hard work.
    Get a life!

  75. Trevor these huge nuts bouncing on your chin always get a great response from you and and a big wet smile afterwards

  76. Some interesting points about ‘The Moron’ came to mind after reading your posts Terry. Forgive me everyone but I’d like to share them.
His emotional/mental age is around a young 17 -he may be well older chronologically but he will never develop further. Isolated or at best a hanger on/watcher. He is not only isolated from his peer group but their whole contempory world - thats why he spends so much time on the internet boning up on long gone film/music ghosts. Thinks he is intellectually superior but unappreciated, in reality he just surfs around the back pages of wiki. His screen weary eyes and attention span are too fucked to read more than a page or two of a book.

No job, or just maybe forced to flip burgers or some other Mcjob. Probably thinks he’ll make loads from a future youtube channel, doesnt realise that his irrelevent bilge is intrinsically worthless. All of which points to him having little or no money, so is dependent on any family for gifts - his world probably still revolves around Xmas and Birthday lists. Which is ok because he is still stuck in a Toyland of games, perhaps ‘collectable’ lego or Dr Who/Trekkie/Star wars figures, and DVDs. I doubt whether drugs or alcohol really figure in his spending [a] he’s too inexperienced to buy and scared to take [b] he rarely leaves home or, increasingly, his room [c] he’s got no one to take it with if he even wanted to.

No active sex life, almost certainly a virgin unless you count a guilty fumbling with a male peer or inappropriate touching of a younger family member or friend at some time. Again looking at his developmental age he’s at a point where he is aware of but is frightened of sex and the challenge it makes to his insecurities, probably more so because of jibes made of him at school and anywhere else he might be confronted by other guys. Only someone who has the mind of a frustrated inexperienced adolescent could think that repeated lame insults about cock size, homosexuality and fellatio could have any effect other than boredom on fully grown sexually active adults in the 21st Century.

Absent father possibly emotionally but more probably also physically - that’s why he’s so caught up on thinking he can ‘catch’ us, with us he’s on fishing trips for instead of with a Dad. He’s crying out for our attention, but also trying to hurt us or better us. And how does he feel if he knows his mommy is screwing another man? It could even be one of us introduced him to this site, and is trying to impress him while at the same time trying to hit out at him.

He possibly has started to have fleeting thoughts of suicide because of the pit he is stuck in but his narcissistic personality disorder keeps him safe, for now. He’s probably more likely to kill his mother before or instead of, himself. She’s certainly the only woman in his life [except perhaps a grandma] and it’s her fault he’s where he his, or even here at all. She’ll never do enough for him, and at some point she’ll get all his blame and anger in return. Might be interesting to relook at any of his rarer jibes at motherfucking to see how close it brings him to his own fucked up situation.

And throughout the months what shines through most is his lack of understanding of the sheer wonderfulness of music of all and any kind. I doubt if he streams that much, and if he has any vinyl or CDs at all it will only be for the packaging or other geek/nerd trainspotting features. Yes, John Cooper Clarke is indeed the only person to have a good word for him.

  77. Huh ? You are fucking weird man

    By Tony C on Mar 23, 2017

  78. To Meremirror, interesting stuff. Worth the post. He clearly is intelligent, despite all of these drawbacks and related annoyances.
He is still trying to fumble with his nuts on some other postings, but a lot of the fire seems to be gone for the moment. There’s no way, with such inadequate anatomy, that he can do anywhere near the nut bouncing that he boasts about. If only he could borrow some money from his parents to actually pay for a screw, he may yet be healed!

  79. You people continue to give these trolls what they want . ( Attention) just talking about them at all feeds the beast . This blog was at one time known for great music , now it’s about The lunatics who comment here! People just can’t shut up . Why not do what some have suggested? Say thanks and leave it at that

By Antonio on Mar 23, 2017

  80. Meremirror and Trevor , the fact that you both are so obsessed with this Moron fool and have actually taken time to analyze his crap is an indication that you both have a few screws loose yourselves , I mean who cares already , talk music or go away please

By George Taylor on Mar 23, 2017

  81. The links are working fine so whats the trouble? Meremirror-you’ve managed to present yourself as a bigger weirdo than the guy you’re trying to rip, not an easy task..

By Andre Parr on Mar 23, 2017

  82. Not responding to trolls is just as bad, as they then control the flow of comments, by people having to censor their behaviour. As this is a form of bullying, like others, public shaming is the answer.
But then, it is hard to take thesse comments seriously when the same punctuation problems, of the other troll on this site become apparent (i.e. Mr Punctuation man). He is always good at agreeing with himself, through his million personas, whether he is trying to be agood guy, like here, or when talking about penises on the Frank Sinatra postings.
All I want is for this bullying to cease.

By Trevor on Mar 24, 2017

  83. hey trevor, totally agree with what you’re saying, [and no, i’m not trevor agreeing with himself] its just tough because the 2 primary trolls we have are pretty dedicated. I say call them on it!

By the bubbler on Mar 24, 2017

  84. it would be nice if we had a separate comments section for corey and the moron so they could go at it full bore, post as each other etc., ive noticed corey starting posting as the moron recently in an effort to discredit his adversary, hence the significant increase in moron comments

By James Cromas on Mar 24, 2017

  85. I say shut up about it / also sick of all the punctuation bullshit . Most people don’t give a crap who or how many , you can’t prove it anyway . These assholes are getting exactly what they want people talking about them . If they stopped there would only be others to take their place after all this is the internet

By Derrick on Mar 24, 2017

  86. no need to prove it, all you have to do is look and anyone can tell whats going on

By corey the on Mar 24, 2017

  87. What a remarkable remembrance by Lee Ballinger.

Thanks for sharing it, among other things!
