MIDNIGHT OIL
Chicago 2017 [no label, 2CD]

Live at The Vic Theatre, Chicago, IL; May 18, 2017. Very good audience recording.

Formed in 1976, through a long and distinguished career, the Australian Midnight Oil became known for its driving hard-rock sound, intense live performances and political activism, particularly in aid of anti-nuclear, environmentalist and indigenous causes. In 2002, vocalist Peter Garrett left the group to focus on his political career. He won the seat of Kingsford Smith at the 2004 General Election for the Australian Labor Party and was selected as Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Heritage and the Arts. In 2007, Prime Minister elect Kevin Rudd named Garrett as Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts. In May 2016, Garrett announced that Midnight Oil would be reforming and stated that they would be touring in 2017, including a trip to the United States.

Thanks to RITCNIN (RyanJ) who recorded and shared the show at Dime.

RITCNIN noted:

Been a fan of the Oil since I was a child. So I was very excited to see them. Their songs still hold up in the political strife that our world is in today. They have been performing almost their whole catalog of tunes and tonight they decided to perform their album, 10-1, from start to finish! Taped from ~50 ft in direct line with the left stack. They were absolutely on fire and I really want to see them in Cleveland in a few months. It was worth the 3.5 hour drive to see them!

  2. Never thought these guys would reunite considering Peter Garrett’s political ambitions. But Midnight Oil had a following stateside and it made sense for them to take advantage of their music - and 80s alternative generally - still being popular here. Thanks for this show!

  3. Another overrated performance by an overrated band in fact they are hacks . Mine is an opinion which is shared by any intelligent individual, unfortunately very few intelligent people visit here

By Smashmouth on May 25, 2017

  4. People here are more versed in genatalia than any musical knowledge in fact most of The commenters act like middle school dropouts

By Smashmouth on May 25, 2017

  5. Smashmouth…opinions are like anuses. Everybody
has one and you prove that you are one.

  6. Point proven

  7. Drove 8 hrs to see this show and loved every minute of it! They haven’t lost their energy or edge. Basically a nearly chronological career overview expertly performed with passion. Super tight, the utility man they bright covered the brass and additional keyboard or guitars for a very complete live sound. The theatre itself is rather tubby sounding in the low end, this became less of an issue as the set progressed. Big win for casual or long time fans alike.

  8. Smashmouth only writes to provoke and annoy. It only encourages if you respond. Just ignore.

By howlingwilf on May 25, 2017

  9. Sir the only thing here that should be ignored is this band of talentless hacks as well as the x rated genatalia talk on every post here . However with as many people with low IQs that inhabit this place I’m certainly not holding my breath

By Smashmouth on May 25, 2017

  10. These huge nuts bouncing on your chin need no provocation and are never an annoyance

By Howlingwilf MORON on May 25, 2017

  11. Pete has also bald nuts, I know I shave them before sucking them

By Smashmouth on May 26, 2017

  12. Smashmouth, what bands do you find talented and not over rated?

By Chilibone on May 27, 2017

  13. I’ve been an Oils fan since the late 80s, and although I fully intended to see them when they came this way, it didn’t work out. So this will have to suffice, and I’m thankful this was posted up here.

  14. Smash, it’s spelled G E N I T A L I A, I believe…

If you’re going to be insulting, please do try to manage your agraphia, at least. Thanks.

    By dr.golgo on May 27, 2017

  15. Smashmouth ,i’m still wondering what do you like ‘your quick to tell what you don’t like ,come on tell all of us at BigO what you do like………other than yourself off course!

By skinned knees on May 28, 2017

  16. Just consider yourself lucky, I told you I have the highest IQ on this blog. Just imagine what woulf be my spelling if I had a low one !

By Smashmouth on May 29, 2017

  17. Smashmouth, why don’t you tell us yourself genius, what would be your spelling if you had a low one? You can’t spell or maintain proper sentence structure and you have awful taste in music, you really don’t come across as having even average intelligence…

By dumbmouth on May 29, 2017

  18. Smashmouth… if you have the highest IQ on this blog how come your having trouble answering a simple question! what kind of music do you like..I’m sure even BigO loved to know maybe he will find some music that you wont insult or bag…after all the music here is put up for every ones taste..not just a lonely “spoilt” child

By skinned knees on May 29, 2017

  19. Still no respect and comments about the passing of Gregg Allman while the usual troll bullshit continues , Par for the course here

By Jeremy on May 29, 2017

  20. Jemery, Greg Allman was o.k. I guess and had a few good songs but theres been so many talents dieing in the last year many bigger stars than him, so par for the course to you too.

By roberto salinos on May 29, 2017

  21. Jeremy, heres your chance to comment about Greg Allman ,there has been quite a few kind post about one of the founders of Southern Rock look over on GREGG ALLMAN BAND - BOSTON 1974 and others. The comments about music disappear quick around here!

By skinned knees on May 29, 2017

  22. Ive noticed that Big O usually posts shows and has tributes to other musicians who pass ,some much less renown than Gregg Allman so guess i just dont understand the lack of love for someone so legendary and was a pioneer of southern rock.To me this is huge, every bit a big as Glenn Frey,Lou Reed,Paul Kantner,Leonard Cohen etc.Couldnt disagree more with Roberto,To me David Bowie is the only artist who has passed in the last two years who surpasses Gregg in iconic status

By Jeremy on May 30, 2017

  23. David Bowie was the only artist who died the last two years you think is better than GregAllman? Get real!

By Jeremy moron on May 30, 2017

  24. i didnt say these other musicians wernt talented.everyone has their own musical tastes, apples and oranges ,greg was certainly a talented singer and musician and very historically significant ,more so than many artists who have passed recently and were honored here with articles and music posts

By Jeremy on May 30, 2017

  25. Jeremy, one other thing you may consider is that I posted the first RIP, recorded as May 28th. The last album post was Robert Cray on May 26th. It is now May 30th. Could it be that they or he is on vacation? I only say this due to time of year and that usually they post new stuff more frequently than this. If this is the case, and there is other stuff of decent quality out there on Gregg, you may get to see that.

By ScarRad on May 30, 2017

  26. Maybe a vacation, that would explain it , let’s hope son

By Jeremy on May 30, 2017

  27. It must be demoralizing for people who run music blogs to have to constantly read the stuff people post here , most of which have nothing to do with music!

By Harold on May 30, 2017

  28. most of which have nothing to do with music!

Don’t be too harsh on yourself Eli

By Harold on May 30, 2017

  29. One day when you click on and it says blog removed , you troll assholes will probably be the reason

By Antonio on May 30, 2017

  30. Many of the good posters with interesting takes , Chuck , Sluggo, Camper , Barth , Sarge , Bruce Skywalker etc hardly comment anymore, I wonder why

By Antonio on May 30, 2017

  31. Jeremy - son? First of all, I’ve checked this site almost daily for 7 years. Second, unless you’re 80 years old, no way, gramps. I’ve done a lot of living, and nearly dying a number of times in my sixty-something years. The guy who murdered my best friend (before I found out) tried to kill me the same way, by shoving me off the sidewalk in front of a car. She saw me flying backwards and bouncing my head and body off the blacktop in front of her and she was able to brake in time. My friend and I were four. The murderer was six. He was allowed to continue going to my school til the end of the semester. A nice start to the realities of life.

By ScarRad on May 30, 2017

  32. Barth ?????????????? You’re a joke, shuddup Corey !

By Antonio Moron on May 30, 2017

  33. Talking to yourself again eh “Jerry” ?
