BOB DYLAN
Knoxville Grail; 1980 [Wild Wolf 2580/a-b, 2CD]

Live at the Civic Auditorium, Knoxville, Tennessee; February 5, 1980. Very good stereo audience recording.

Thanks to atreides for sharing the show at Dime.

atreides noted:

Great early ’80s show. Bob’s voice is upfront and powerful. The song versions don’t stray far from the released studio versions but are every bit as powerful… if not more so.

  2. I disagree with atreides. This is faster. Dylan is faster, yet more emphatic (Bob emphasizes key areas to really hit the messages home, like “when you gonna wake uh-uh-uh-up!” and yet the lyrics are spread out in places with extra filler from Bob and the Gospel trio. The drumming and bass are extra heavy and rapid. Even though this is live audience recording, it’s incredible. The only recording to compare to is the April 1980 Toronto concert, same players and singers but it’s soundboard. I like this much better!

  13. Hey GW,

There is a CD of R.Dean Taylor’s that has outtakes and alternate versions. It’s self-released; I bought it direct from his website.

Thanks for bringing us more Bob, Big O.

  14. Superb. I normally pass on “audience recordings” but this is a saver. (No pun intended).

I’m not a christian, probably neither is Dylan these days. However, I don’t think he EVER returned to this level of passion in his live shows ever again. (And yes I’ve seen him a half dozen times since the mid 1980s).

    Thanks.

  15. I love sucking cock but these rock stars aren’t into being sucked off by a guy. You ladies make me jealous, all the famous cocks you’ve had!

    By Tony C on Jul 5, 2017

  16. IanG, whether Dylan realizes it or not, the influence of God is still affecting his writing in subtle ways and in the way he conducts himself. It probably takes, in your terms, a Christian to recognize it. His humbleness in going to accept his Nobel award in Stockholm was wrapped in his humor, since he scheduled his concert on the first of April, and received the medal in his hotel room, not during the concert where he could have made it a big thing. I wonder if his plagerizing the Notes version of the books was another self-directed jab at his ego. It’s as if “I can’t believe you guys gave me the award for my lyrics. I’m nobody. To prove it I’ll quote from the Notes summary of the books.” A humbleness when it comes to God and our success in life is an attitude gained from Bob and mine’s church, the Vineyard, which I still attend. Some churches are the opposite. I imagine Bob cringes like I do at them.

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  17. IanG,

God is still influencing Dylan, you see it in his occasional song lyrics or titles. It’s obvious to a Christian especially in his attitude to Nobel prize committee. Bob and I come from a church that emphasizes humbleness in attitude, not boastfulness. We started out as part of the Jesus Movement, mostly hippies, bikers and young rock musicians in the early 70’s, The Vineyard. We knew pride led to trouble. Bob’s interactions with Nobel Prize Committee shows his humbleness wrapped in humor.

  18. Hi ScarRad. Interesting response. thanks.

By IanG on Jul 5, 2017

  19. ScarRad ,no offense but to me all religion is bullshit. Whether it’s God , Buddah, Allah, or some giant gold statue somewhere in the African jungle. People just can’t accept the fact that when you die that’s it ! No afterlife with Angels playing harps , no hundreds of virgins , no seeing dead loved ones who passed years ago. No fires of hell and a devil with horns with a pitchfork, no reincarnation or coming back as a dog or a cat . All there is is a whole in the ground with hungry maggots eating on a rotten corpse, or if you choose it ,a crematorium in which your body is crushed then burned to ashes , Sorry but that’s it ! Religion is a crutch for people who can’t accept reality and there are billions of them and always have been .most wars throughout mankind have been over religion Christians slaughtering Jews and violent Muslims murdering Christians and non Muslims then as well as now . It never ends . Human beings haven’t really evolved much since the mid evil times , the only difference is the weapons have changed from swords and clubs to guns and bombs .

  20. “Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle in your boots and shoes
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, you got nothing to lose
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, like a swarm of bees
Wiggle on your hands and knees”

By swappers on Jul 5, 2017

  21. Paul Stewart? So — you died and came back? because you left here and returned to tell us there’s nothing? If God not real, and you love others like Jesus said to do, you lose nothing and others benefit. However, if God real, and you believe Jesus, you gain heaven and others benefit. Is that a hard decision?

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  22. Heaven and hell must be big places to accommodate all the people who have died since the beginning of time . Maybe I should join ISIS so I can get all those virgins What bullshit .

By Tom on Jul 5, 2017

  23. BTW, Paul Stewart, I like that phrase, “no offense, but”. Isn’t it funny how it always precedes something offensive? No offense, but, evolution is the true opiate of the masses. If you believe in it, you hope you don’t have to encounter a personal God. Funny how that evolution just doesn’t seem to be working for ya.

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  24. Paul Stewart-nobody knows any more or less about the afterlife than anyone else-your assertion that we just end up in a hole in the ground is no more informed than those who believe in kingdoms and angels..

By Kid Quick on Jul 5, 2017

  25. Tom, all the people who have lived and died almost until now doesn’t amount to a thimble-full compared to all that are alive now. Just track the last 100 years. Look how India and China have grown during that time. Ever hear of the population bomb?

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  26. Science is proving the universe to be much more fantastic than religious ideas ever have been concerning the afterlife-the multi-verse theory is much more complex and harder to grasp than any version of father, son, holy ghost, etc.

By Kid Quick on Jul 5, 2017

  27. I’m offended by stupidity, like people who blindly accept that all this crap is real .Who says it’s real ? Why human beings ,Flesh and blood people that’s who have preached this crap since the beginning of time . The devil , Angels , Hell if you grew up in the sixties you were told you would go to hell if you didn’t go to church

By Paul Stewart on Jul 5, 2017

  28. When the theoretical answers provided by the scientific community become so incredible, you begin to realize that anything’s possible and religious concepts become comparatively ordinary.

By Kid Quick on Jul 5, 2017

  29. You were told the same thing if your mom or dad caught you playing with yourself. You would go to hell and also go blind . What about animals, why don’t they have souls ? They are biologically similar to humans What makes us so special? And which religion and how many gods ?What aboutAllah and Buddha ?

By Paul Stewart on Jul 5, 2017

  30. Oh, the old reliable ad hominid (personal) attack. The standby of liberals when they are losing, as they have nothing of substance. Losing on points so they go personal. so predictable. Funny, I don’t recall that being in the bible, if you didn’t go to church you’re going to hell. I bet you remember hearing that if you didn’t get baptized, you wouldn’t be saved either? What about the thief on the cross next to Jesus? He didn’t get baptized. Did Jesus tell him to go to hell? No. “Today you will be with me in paradise.”
BTW, how come after the resurrection, none of the apostles gave up on Jesus, even when they were faced with execution….?
Because they saw him after he came back in person.

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  31. Scar I love Dylan too, but it seems like if he took a dump on his nobel prize you’d find a way to see it as witty and purposeful..

By john bughes on Jul 5, 2017

  32. Oh, if you want an unbiased opinion, go read Josephus. A Jew hired by the Romans to write about the history of that time, and he mentions Jesus. Jesus was a real person.

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  33. Point proven . Madeline Murray Ohaire when asked why she became atheist replied that she read the Bible , in other words she had a brain

By Paul Stewart on Jul 5, 2017

  34. Every time I used to go to church, there would be these cute hot teens wearing short skirts that I kept staring at .I got arroused, am I going to hell?

By Ronnie on Jul 5, 2017

  35. You’ll burn Ronnie , you have committed an unforgivable sin . I have noticed that girls and women going to church these days do show a lot of leg and other things these days , not exactly church appropriate, what happened to dressing modestly?

By Tom on Jul 5, 2017

  36. Oh ok you guys insist on keeping this as base and dumb as possible, carry on

By Kid Quick on Jul 5, 2017

  37. The holy church of God doesn’t allow for dresses above the ankles and women don’t wear makeup . So many religions and different churches, which is real ?Baptists , Methodists ,Catholics , Muslims,Hindues , Buddhists ,all bullshit

By Tom on Jul 5, 2017

  38. Ronnie, Jesus’ disciples asked Jesus, “Should we call fire down from Heaven to consume them?” Jesus instead said, You do not know whose Spirit you are of! Aren’t you glad that it is God’s Spirit that makes those decisions, not Jesus’ disciples? (Christians). John 3:17 quotes Jesus, right after the famous John 3:16,”For God sent His son into the world, NOT TO CONDEMN the world, but that the world, through Him, would be saved”. now, isn’t that good news?

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  39. Paul Stewart, funny about the fact that she, the atheist, raised a son who became a Christian. What, she was so inept as an atheist? God has the last laugh.

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  40. cheers that’s brilliant stuff tom and scar, what a heavyweight theological discussion you two complete imbeciles are having

By JaBoing on Jul 5, 2017

  41. JaBoing - Ad Hominid attacks without prior comments and admitting to being an “incomplete imbecile” disqualifies you from the discussion. Which of course you just become part of, making you by your own words, a complete imbecile!!

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  42. This is what intelligent people do to have fun. Other people talk about cocks, pricks and sizes and balls bouncing. Sorry for them.

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  43. Maybe with North Korea having the ICBM and access to nuclear material, talk about a creator is pertinent. The nuclear doomsday clock is about half a minute from midnight. The rest of you and bend over and kiss it goodbye.

By ScarRad on Jul 5, 2017

  44. I suppose her son chose to not be a thinker but a follower of the same mumbo jumbo that has consumed mankind forever and always

By Paul Stewart on Jul 5, 2017

  45. Can we get back to more serious topics ? Like the size of Bobs cock ?

    By Tony C on Jul 6, 2017

  46. A shame you removed the Bob on SNL tracks, as he is backed by a rocking New Wave band. One of the coolest oddities of Dylan’s entire cannon.

By RollingStoner on Jul 6, 2017

  47. Oh, the mumbo-jumbo of atheism that consumes tens of millions, like those proud proponents of atheism, Stalin and Mao? Funny how atheists fail to bring their names up in conversation! Communism is extremely atheist and intolerant of others.

By ScarRad on Jul 6, 2017

  48. Hey, great Dylan show [of hundreds!] and pretty good sound. Thanks big o

By ZapPop on Jul 6, 2017
