JOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO
Fulfilling The Fantasies [FTF-2009, 1CD]

Double Fantasy outtakes.

Even if wasn’t apparent then, John Lennon’s music still maintained that same intense fragility towards the end of his life. This series of studio outtakes for what became the Double Fantasy album (1980) bears this out. From I’m Losing You (”Just put a band aid on it/stop the bleeding now”) to I’m Stepping Out (”Just leave a message on the phone and tell them to screw it”), the hurt shows. Fulfilling The Fantasies is an audio improvement of a previously available boot, and achieves a really clean sound.

Leaving out the classic Starting Over and Woman, about 80 per cent of the album is covered including Yoko’s I’m Moving On, Yes I’m Your Angel and Walking on Thin Ice. Plus outtakes of Borrowed Time (released version on Lennon Legend, 1997) and I Don’t Want To Face It (released version on Wonsaponatime, 1998).

There’s a lovely moment on Nobody Told Me (which Lennon wrote for Ringo, who didn’t have the heart to record it, and it finally came out on Milk and Honey, 1984) when Sean calls to say goodnight. And yes, it’s Beautiful Boy that is the standout song here.  Lennon was so right - “life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans.” - Philip Cheah

Thanks to Atlasstar who recompiled the tracks and shared them lossless on the internet. Because they were so lovingly compiled and so well annotated, we took the liberty of sharing the tracks with our readers who we feel would appreciate the effort and enjoy listening to them. We hope Atlasstar would not object.

This is what Atlasstar wrote:

This is for everyone with a need for a better Fulfilling The Fantasies. I apologize to anyone with fond memories of the original ‘as it was’, you may not want to download this to preserve your memory.

The original creators of Fulfilling The Fantasies did not have the best quality recordings at their fingertips. Their creation was compiled from basically two sources. Off the air broadcasts of the “Lost Lennon Tapes” and audio tapes circulating among collectors. The tape used the most for the release was one known as the “Cheap Trick Tape”, to be referred to as the CT tape from here forward. Since that time most of the tracks have become available in superior quality on a number of other releases. So this collection was compiled using these newer sources to recreate the original LP.

01. Cleanup Time
Backing Track - From the Bag Records LP Vol 26 track 6 of the Lost Lennon Tape series.

02. I’m Losing You
From the Yellow Dog/Orange CD “Miscellaneous Tracks” 018 track 7. I choose the Orange release here even though it is missing the intro hi-hat which I added from LLT Bag Records vol 26 track 3. There was some tape hiss that I removed with some selective noise removal. This is also available on “Double Fantasy Working Version” MBEJ-001 but I felt they used too much sound reduction so I rejected their version.

03. Beautiful Boy
From Yellow Dog/Orange CD “Miscellaneous Tracks” 018 track 8. There was some tape hiss that I removed with some selective noise removal. This is also available on BAG Records LP Vol 26 track 4 but missing the “1-2″ from the intro. I personally prefer the BAG version and added the “1-2″ to make a complete copy.

04. I’m Moving On
From Yellow Dog/Orange CD “Miscellaneous Tracks” 018 track 9. There was some tape hiss that I removed with some selective noise removal.

05. I’m Your Angel
“Double Fantasy Working Version” MBEJ-001 track 3. This was missing the high hat closing at the very start of the track but I added that from the original FTF LP.

06. Dear Yoko
From Lost Lennon Tapes Broadcast 91-08/5 From my original off-air recording.

07. I’m Stepping Out
Lost Lennon Tapes Broadcast 89-13/3 From my original off-air recording.

08. I’m Stepping Out
Tape Source “I’m Stepping Out Sessions”. This is a portion of an audio tape circulating among collectors but never booted in its entirety.

09. Nobody Told Me
From the Lost Lennon Tape series released on Bag Records LP Vol 26 track 5.

10/11. Borrowed Time
From the Lost Lennon Tape series released on Bag Records LP Vol 35 track 2. On the original FTF this track was edited so that the track started with a snippet of the song. In actuality there is a bit of dialogue, then the song, then some more dialogue. I edited the BAG version to re-create the original running order. After John says “I don’t move mic’s” is where the song should appear, then the remaining dialogue.

12. Borrowed Time
From the Lost Lennon Tape series released on Bag Records LP Vol 29 track 12.

13. I Don’t Wanna Face It
Original LP

14. Walking On Thin Ice
Original LP

On tracks 13-14 The best available versions to date are still on the original (FTF) LP. Since the original LP was flawed I decided to do some restoration work on these tracks.

This may not be the ultimate “Fulfilling The Fantasies”, as I’m sure there are better copies of some of these tracks still out there some where, but by using widely available recordings I believe I’ve created a better version of the original LP.

  10. shaun - on aug 12th 1980 Nielsen and Carlos participated in sessions for John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s album Double Fantasy for only one day. only three songs were recorded before Yoko banned Cheap Trick, citing that they were using John. the sessions were at the hit factory in nyc. they recorded a version of im losing you.. thats on the anthology box set that came out in 98. lennon wrote the song in bermuda in june of 1980 following a failed phone call to yoko. the origins of the song began in late 78.
another song was ono’s im moving on. lennon added 2nd guitar and tony levin added bass. george small was on keyboards. they also did cold turkey and its so hard. but i dont think those were all recorded since only 3 have ever made it onto the bootleg circuit.
they rerecorded the songs they did ultimately use and tried to get the same feel that they had with the cheap trick members. they really werent able to with the session musicians but they sure tried. yoko thought that cheap trick were an unknown band trying to cash in on johns fame.
    hope i helped u a little.
