PINK FLOYD
Animals On Empire [The Godfatherecords 439/440, 2CD]
Live at the Empire Pool, Wembley, Middlesex, UK, March 18, 1977. Good to very good audience recording.
Although Pink Floyd played only nine dates in the UK during the Animals tour in 1977, only one show, Knobs, an audience recording of the March 15 show, is listed on the Pink Floyd ROIO Database site.
So this release would be a welcomed addition for collectors and fans.
This is what collectorsmusicreviews.com wrote:
Two tape sources are in circulation but the label use the better of the two. (The other source is incomplete and sounds much worse). It is [a] complete audience recording that is very clear and close to the stage. The beginning of “Dogs” is somewhat muffled due to the taper checking the tape in the recorder but it is nothing serious and Godfather did an impressive work to minimize it. In general Godfather improved the fidelity and produced a very enjoyable and overall excellent Pink Floyd title.
The London shows were very important on this tour because, as Pink Floyd manager told Melody Maker, “After all other concerts are just concerts, but this is their home ground. When they play in London it’s got to be right.” The band played in Wembley in November 1974 and hated the venue so much they vowed never to play it again. Originally they wanted to play in either Earls Court or Olympia but neither venue was available so they settled for Wembley again.
Before the first London show they were harassed by the Greater London Council (GLC) who had safety concerns regarding the giant pig and the light show. The results of these pressures on the band amounted to what one letter to Melody Maker complained about the mechanical performance. This is true for the first song of the night “Sheep” which plods along, but things warm up soon after.
Thanks to hokafloyd who shared the lossless tracks on the internet.

Thank you for this, I was at one of these shows (time blurs the exact details), my first Pink Floyd concert and remember it being totally fantastic (so, not the first night ,I guess)

hey bigo, thanks! will play, after i fix tags. i’m unfamiliar with middlesex. as far i’ve always known, wembley is in london.
this is similar to the sheep independence day msg show bigo offered in aug 08 maybe. i have it too. i’ve gotten all the pink floyd boots bigo has offered and restarted except for one that was an lp boot a few weeks ago. it didn’t look very interesting. it was a best of type boot.
best,
ed

Pink Floyd: In the Flesh the complete performance history, by Glenn Povey and Ian Russell, the definitive record of Floyd shows, don’t list this date. Furthermore, the shows listed on the 15th and 16th of March at the Empire Pool make mention of Money as the encore, not Us and Them.
Questions; comments?

Ed, London IS middlesex. It used to be a real county, but the expanding city swallowed it up, bit by bit. Wikipedia has more, but the core of its entry is “almost all of the original area was incorporated into an enlarged Greater London in 1965, with small parts transferred to neighbouring Hertfordshire and Surrey”.
The county is no more, but the name lingers. (The main hospital in central london was Middlesex Hospital, which closed in 1995).
So yes… You are right, Wembley is in (North) London - and in Middlesex.

curious why Big O does not just put the tracks in a zipped folder to download. this present method seems overly unnecessary, no? not trying to be a troll.
By Jason on Jan 31, 2010
Hello Jason
Thanks for your comments.
Not many readers like downloading zip folders. But more crucial for us is the limited bandwidth. Unless we use paid sites such as rapidshare and megaupload, zip files will not only tie up our bandwidth (especially when there is a swarm), that will get us “kicked off” by the web hosting companies in no time.
Also, individual files allow the readers to pick and choose and also to try out the track if they are not sure.
It may be inconvenient for readers like yourself and we hope you understand our situation.
Cheers.

Ladies and Gents at Big O:
Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have supplied the soundtrack for this weekend’s Thompson - Columbia run, as well as for some sunset photography.
In your own may you are the new millennium’s version of Beaker Street, at least for me.
Keep up the good work. If you run into any more 70s-80s Wishbone Ash, please keep me in mind.
Thank you again. Respectfully,
James

Thanks very much for this as I WAS there and can vouch for the fact that “Us and Them” was indeed the encore.
I was 17 and went to the gig with one of my best friends Nick and two girls we both fancied like crazy (which gave an added frisson to the event). Neither of us were successful in our pursuits - but hey, we got to see Pink Floyd!
I remember being disappointed by not hearing “Money” bu have grown to appreciate “Us and Them” as the better song.
If you haven’t checked out the 1977 Floyd bootlegs, I strongly recommend that you do as Gilmour’s extended solos on the WYWH material - exp. SOYCD-6-9 is absolutely fantastic.

Was at this concert. What a blast to hear it again. Cheers!

I have never watch a Pink Floyd concert before but this reminds me of my first rock awakening way back in HS watching Dark Side of the moon video. I find this one for me.

TOTALLY Awesome - just checked my ticket stub and I was at this very show -front row, just right of centre stage (most of the time sitting on the floor, as we snuck up from back nose-bleeds, but that is another story)…..will never forget this show!!!! (but this recording helps refresh a few brain cells!)….THANKS!!!.

Please let’s not forget Snowy White who was the extra guitar and occasionally bass (so Roger could do guitar) on the Animals tour. He took a solo in “Pigs On The Wing” (can’t recall if it was part 1, part two or both).

I’ve got a slew of recordings from the Animals tour but not this one.. thanks for posting BigO!
By Tom on Jul 22, 2013
Thanks for the post as always, you’re doing great things keeping music alive. My only negative comment is this, i dont like the idea of having to sign up or log in anywhere to get a track. 4shared used to just have the download link open to anyone. Possibility that you guys might be finding another host with a similar set up as the old 4shared for us paranoids? Either way, keep doing the good things you do.

Hey Big O can you send me the Dogs html. Nothing is working in ILivid. Kind of weird. Looking forward to hearing this one. thanks Jimmer
By Jimmer on Jul 24, 2013
Too many hoops to jump through to get this one unfortunately. Had a problem with all the html links just for a heads up. Usually there worth the try. Anyway have a good day.
By Jimmer on Jul 24, 2013
jimmer u dont need iLivid. i don’t have it but i believe it is a scam. u might want to uninstall it. i haven’t signed up with 4shared either. i just play the song and record it. there are several software programs available for this.
